Guest guest
Licorice root can be used just like cortisone therapy. The recommendation is 1 teaspoon in a tea 4 times a day or every 4 hours. It works by slowing the breakdown on cortisol in the liver that your own adrenals make. So, it keeps your cortisol in the system longer. 1 teaspoon 4 times a day is roughly equal to 15 to 20 mg of cortisone. Licorice has a couple of downsides. One is that it is mildly estrogenic, which lots of hypos don't need, as they are often estrogen dominant. The other is that it can affect salt balance and blood pressure. On the good side, it is very good for the digestive tract and healing for it. I used it for a short while in place of my Cortef. I found it to be a hassle to make tea for having 4 times a day, when you are at work. the other problem I had was dosage. When you are measuring out a teaspoon, it is difficult to adjust doseages perfectly. If you want to start to drop your dose, it's kind of a hassle to fine tune doses. Plus, different batches can have varying potency and you are never sure how much exactly you are altering your cortisol levels. I also had a little trouble with it causing my lower legs to poof up. But, even though it was not accurate enough of a treatment for me, I am sure it is good enough for most people. Live Extension Foundation recommends it for treating low adrenal function. It is really safe as a rule, or for sure as safe as Cortef or any of the others. Tish
Guest guest
Licorice root made my heart pound and sent my BP over 150/90. I've never been over 120 until armour. Try it, but watch for bp and pulse. Affects everyone different, I guess. -- prr " kholl45 " kholl45@... wrote: Well, Tish...what do you think about licorice root for adrenals?
