Has anyone tried Guaifenesin?

Has anyone tried this treatment? It is a component found in most

cough medications.

Many Doc's are trying this now - some swear by it.

It is suppose to release the things that our bodies hold on to that

causes the pain of FM/CFIDS. Thus initially making you feel worse,

but eventually getting you to a better state.

It is inexpensive and easy to get even without RX. Dosage usually

starts at 300mg per day going up to 3600 to 4800mg a day. ( A bit

much - I know) and if it helps you are expected to take it

forever !!!!!

It is suppose to have minimum to no bad side effects.

I am asking this question because I started seeing a new Doc about 2

months ago who specializes in FM/CFIDS and uses the Guai approach.

My problem is it causes extreme nausea and vomiting for me. Not a

normal effect & and I feel like he (the doc) got upset with me due to

this. And I was wondering if anyone else has tried it and had this

problem.

I also noticed it caused more noticable effects on my mitral valve

prolapse. Before I only had slight chest pains and numbness. But when

I take the Guai - chest pain and numbness increase as well as total

inability to lay on my left side.

For the life of me I could not understand why he got upset - but

realized this was the foundation of his practice and I was blowing a

whole in his theory.

I have major stomach problems and almost everything I eat or take has

this nauseating and vomiting effect at some time or other. I have

never been able to take anything for more than 3 - 4 dosed before my

tummy rejects it. and HE KNEW THAT !!!!!!!

Anyway - just wondering if anyone else has tried this and what their

results were.

Thank and I hope everyone has a nice day.

Cinda,

I've tried Guaifenesin for sinus/nasal problems, but primarily for the

Fibromyalgia. Except for thickening mucus (bad sinus problems with asthma), I

had nothing else happen. Didn't help, didn't hurt.

If it is any consolation, I get violently ill on any myacins... I throw up for

weeks, even after I quit taking it. I have lots of unusual reactions to a lot

of things. My doctor finally figured out I was determined to be different. I

like to think of it as 'keeping them on their toes'.

But don't you just hate the doctors who are astonished that you don't follow

their pre-conceived notions of how you are supposed to react.

Yes i hate it intensely. And he seemed so good. Compasionate,

understanding, and really knows how to detect issues. He found

several things that other doc's overlooked. But alot of that changed

when I could not follow protocol.

Thanks Irene for your support.

Since the my post - this Doc has changed his tone just a bit. I have

not been back to his office yet - as it is 3 hours away - but have

been communicating by e-mail.

After being off Guai for about 2 weeks - mitral valve prolapse has

chilled down to as before. And have realized that Guai also

interfered with my hormones - allowing hot flashes and night sweat to

break through. I know it was the Guai because I took the hormones

long before Guai - but began to have these during Guai treatment.

I did see another Doc - Thursday who ordered some blood work and ran

an EKG and referred me to an internal medicine Doc of Friday.

EKG - normal showing of mitral valve prolapse. ( Thank God) But who

knows what would happen if I had continued Guai.

Everyone makes the statement - Guai has no known side effects. I

guess I blowed a whole in that to. Because for me it caused - profuse

vomiting, increased chest pain, numbness, interference with hormone

treatment, ect.........

Bottom line - we are all different and FM/CFIDS causes alot of crazy

stuff to happen. Thus - not following any guidelines. And in my

opinion - this is why it is so difficult for Doc to treat.

Again thanks,

Hi

I tried Guaifenesin and I experienced hot flashes and the sweating.

Since it is about the only thing I take I attributed the effects to Guai

and stopped taking it. I know that this product is the basis for the

treatment written about in the book What Your Doctor May Not Tell You

About Fibromyalgia, but it didn't work for me.

Cinda I couldn't have said it better:

Bottom line - we are all different and FM/CFIDS causes alot of crazy

stuff to happen. Thus - not following any guidelines. And in my

opinion - this is why it is so difficult for Doc to treat.

Also I wanted to say thanks to all who responded to my email a month or

two back. I am the mom with 2 boys with varying disabilities and I was

trying to figure out how or what to do to take care of me. Well I did

take an hour to go painting and I really enjoyed it. I do plan to check

into massage to see if that will help with my pain.

Take care all

Hello everybody!!

Over the weekend I found out something, that really surprised me. My friend has

fibro. She never mentioned it.

We happended to be talking about Guaifenesin and she said she is taking a lot of

it.

She used to live in California and her doctor is actually the guy that wrote the

book " what doctors don't tell you about fibro " (I think that is the title)

She said she believes in this treatment and it makes a big difference for her.

She also told me that it will make you feel worse at first.

I will have to check into this some more.

I just got tested for Mono, and it was negative. I don't think I ever had mono.

It just had to be ruled out.

I haven't been following the postings very well lately, too much stuff to do....

.... and fighting a cold.

WELCOME new members!! Glad to have you all!!!

I'm also taking it off and on. It helped a lot, but I have to take it

religiously all the time, everyday. It's cheap enough, but I kept

forgetting.

Nobody knows why it works, but with me, it made me lose a lot of excess

water, so I guess it helps the inflammation (that the doctor says really

isn't there).... .....

Hello!!

I think I might have mentioned this before.

My friend used to live in California and was treated by the doctor who wrote the

book " what your doctor might not tell you about fibro " (or very close to that)

He explains the guiafenesin in his book and also his website.

She has been taking it for a long time. Her fibro got less with it.

It is normal for it to go in cycles. The end result should be that you feel

better overall, but there will still be times when the pain comes back. It is

supposed to makes those times less.

I am not very comfortable to start taking this stuff on my own. There are also

different dosages for different people, so I really want a doctor to supervise.

Also it is to be expected that at first the body gets rid of a bunch of toxins

and you actually feel worse, and then it gets better long term.

I'll be seeing my doctor today. I will ask about Guiafenesin and also Human

Groth Hormone.

There is always something else I have not tried to make me better. I think all

these symptoms I'm having a a vicious circle. If I can just break it a little,

maybe everyhting else I can do will help just a little more then.

Take care,

I've been on 600 mg Guai for four months...thought it was helping at

first. Got worse, but turned out to just be a flare...I am still

taking it since I have the Chron. Sinusitis and Asthma. As other

replys have stated, its cheap, few if any side effects, and can help

with other problems as well.

You won't know unless you try...just make sure it is PURE guai...and

stay away from the Guainfenesin-LA...it is not as effective.

Good luck....
