Guest guest
The closure affects 37 patients currently on the transplant wait list and another 45 in the screening process to determine eligibility. It does not affect 255 patients who have already had liver transplants but receive their follow-up care at UC . The university began notifying patients Thursday. They will be referred to three liver transplant centers operating in the Bay Area, including UC San Francisco, Stanford University and California Pacific Medical Center. The program will not shut down until all patients have made a transition elsewhere…….. http://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/stories/2008/12/08/daily80.html?ana=from_rss Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight - Whatever it Takes! Guest guest
Barb, Thank you for posting this information. I don't get a newspaper and so did not know about it. This is devastating news for me because my PSC is progressing and I hoped to get my transplant at UC , which is a short drive from my house. There are more patients affected by this than the number mentioned in the article because there are patients, like me who have not been referred for screening yet. Dr. Bowlus has about 45 PSC patients in addition to patients with other liver diseases. I just emailed him to see if he will be staying on at UCD. Because UCD was the only liver transplant center in the central California organ procurement area, one could expect to get a liver match while one's Meld was reasonably low. In San Francisco, patients have to wait until their Meld is at least 24 before they get a transplant. I know a PSC patient whose Meld was 40 before he got a liver at UC San Francisco last year.
