no. not always. you can have atrophic thyroiditis.

i can remember one time in my 30s (i'm almost 50 now) noticing that my neck

looked a little larger than usual...but evidently it went away. i've never had

an enlarged neck since.

I have hashi's.

i fired the first doctor who diagnosed me. all he cared about was getting my

TSH back in range. Free T4 had not even moved, but the TSH had dropped.

Then i went to an endo listed on the top docs. haha. TSH obsessed too.

Fired her.

Decided I had to get well before i could even deal with another doctor. i

read everything i could....came to this forum and learned everything I

could....and I'm well on the way to recovery. as much recovery as one can get

after

being untreated for 15 - 25 years. it will be harder now for me to ever feel

totally right.

so anyway, after getting my mental capabilities back (i had gotten really

really slow and dull and couldn't understand anything there for a while)...and

getting some energy...i did search out another doctor. a holistic one. one

that doesn't accept insurance. i like him. he doesn't know a heck of a lot

about thyroid disease - but he's willing to work with me and willing to learn.

that's better than all the doctors i have had in my entire lifetime.

the point is - it's good to have a doctor. just don't expect miracles. and

for sure don't leave it to a doctor to get you well.

trust yourself to do the things to get you well.

Thanks, ,

Hashi's? I don't know much about it, but I looked in my Merck's

manual last night to see what all they say about thyroid

problems...ha..not much.

They say that with Hashi's your thyroid is enlarged...easily

detectable...is that right? Do you get what they call

a " goiter " ?...or was that something else I was reading? Well, then,

I don't think my thyroid is enlarged ... so I must not have Hashi's.

I thought it interesting how little was printed about the treatment

of thyroid disorders.

Where did you find your new doctor? M.D.? or what?

intelligent help that I used to think doctors were supposed to be

capable of -- only much better because it's backed by years and years

of experience, here. I'm real new to. I'm glad I had some lab work

done in January because it turns out that I have thyroid anti-bodies

so that means I have Hashimoto's Auto-Immune Thyroid (HAIT), or

Hashi's. I got impatient with the so-called expert doc who was

stringing me along and started trying an OTC glandular and I had now

way of really controlling the dosage, although I started to feel

great, fast. After about 2 weeks it looked like I needed a more

intelligent, and measured (literally) approach and I changed docs.

Goiters do not necessarily mean Hashi's nor does not having one mean you do not

have Hashi's. Hashi's is am autoimmune disease of the thyroid. It CAN cause

swelling and inflammation of the gland but this will come & go depending on if

it is currently being attacked by antibodies. The only way to know for sure if

you have it is to have a blood test done for thyroid antibodies.

Hi Cindi,

Ya know, I guess I really should try to find a dr. (maybe a DO), but

I KNOW around here at least, I'll be wasting my money and end up

going from dr. to dr. again until I find one who will " cooperate " .

I get too frustrated at their ignorance, too. Maybe they will at

least order the blood work.

It goes to show you how much the " Merck's Manual " is worth...

Hi Cindi,

Well, first of all...it's hard to imagine you were " slow and dull "

LOL.

Second of all...I appreciate everything you're sharing with me. Part

of my problem is that I DON'T trust myself right now to do the things

it takes to get me well. After searching for answers and being at a

point of desperation for so long...no matter what I tried wasn't

solving my problems...I have a hard time trusting myself.

I know,...all the things I'm feeling emotionally and physically are

not normal...I just don't know how to get out from underneath it

all. Can't determine if it's all menopause or part thyroid...or

whatever.
