Guest guest
I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect when having a liver biopsy. Will they give me anything to relax me or will I have to go thru this cold turkey? Thanks, Clint UC-1978 PSC-2006
Guest guest
My son received both pain med and something to help him relax just before actual biopsy. You can always state that you need something to help you relax. Joanne H (, Ca, mom of , 18, UC/PSC 2-06) I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect when having aliver biopsy. Guest guest
Clint, Let the nurse know that you want some something to help you relax, so that they can call the doc and get the order. I had to ask. I still remember it, because they have to have you awake enough to hold your breath when they do the biopsy. But then they can give you a " chaser " dose as soon as it is done. Than I needed a pain pill afterwords. I was sore and had abdominal cramping for several days. But I also took off for a 1000 mile car ride two days later, so that may have added to my recovery. Guest guest
Clint, I just had the area where they took the biopsy numbed. I didn't have any other meds. I only had to wait about an hour after the biopsy to leave the hospital. The spot was a little tender for a couple days - most likely the result of me poking the area repetitively to see if it still hurt . It wasn't even half as bad as I had expected. Guest guest
I had a liver biopsy last month. They gave me something to relax me but nothing for pain other than something to numb where the needle went it. It was uncomfortable but not to bad. If they will give you something for pain - go for it. I had to wait in the hospital for 4 hours and was sort for 2 or 3 days after. good luck. > > I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect when having a > liver biopsy. Guest guest
Although I didn't know my husband yet when he had his liver biopsy, I've heard the stories. They gave him a local anesthetic to numb the area where the needle goes in. He is far braver than me-I think I would DEMAND to be knocked out, or at the very least, ask for something for anxiety. Good luck!

Guest guest
The reason they will not knock you out, or make you too incoherent, is that they depend on you to breathe and stop breathing as needed. The liver is very close to the lung, and you have to be very still as the needle is going in. > > Although I didn't know my husband yet when he had his liver biopsy, I've heard the stories. > They gave him a local anesthetic to numb the area where the needle goes in. Guest guest
Clint, I have had two biopsies. With the first one, all I was given was a topical numbing agent and I felt nothing during the procedure but the pressure of them pushing the neddle in, really there was no pain just pressure. The second I was given something to relax, two things actually and a topical and when she went in for the first one it hurt so I was given more medication so she could go in for a second and thrid section. The only difference that I can think of between the two was that the first one was done froma more abdominal position and the second was done from a more side position. Also I may have been having more trouble with inflamation when they did the second one. I have trouble with generalized muscle and cartildge inflamation. The others are correct if you want something ask for it and if they begin and you don't think it's enough let them know. It's no bad, it really isn't. Guest guest
My first and only Liver Biopsy was a nightmare. I am sharing this only because the procedure here is so different from what I see is done in the US. I don't want to make anyone nervous. In my case there was a male nurse who gave me a shot for local anesthesia, didn't wait long enough and hurt me when he poked me with the needle. He then managed to yell at me for not staying still. I had to lay on my right side for six hour in a hallway (there were no rooms available) and I had to pee but couldn't make myself do it in the bottle. In short, the worst medical test I had in my life and next time (if I ever will let there be a next time) I will opt for general anesthetics. ;-) Regards, Chaim Boermeester, Israel

Guest guest
Shaul, To be honest, I have no clue. This was all well before I started to be proactive with my health. I think it was a normal needle though. Chaim From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of CholangitisSuprt@... Guest guest
I was given nothing before they did it.all I felt was pressure and was surprised how it didn't really hurt at all. I did feel pain afterwards though in my shoulder and it really really hurt I wasn't allowed to go home for 6 hours afterwards either and was quite sore for a few days but really it isn't as bad as it sounds.I think if you go in all nervous and tense things tend to hurt more but if you just go in and say to yourself yeah got to have this done,it may hurt but its just for a bit and then think of something else and I find that helps me with anything horrible I have had to have done.Good luck. Guest guest
I believe you would have known if it was a springloaded needle as the whole thing takes a split second. So you are right it was prob a reg needle.
