Guest guest
Skyangel, This doctor's opinion *really* bothers me, for a lot of reasons. I was dx with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes 2 yrs ago. My Dr. PCP, not endocrinologist) said there's no such thing as " borderline " diabetic. You either have diabetes, or you don't. It's like being " borderline " pregnant. Many factors can predispose a person to developing diabetes, and overweight can be one since it causes your body to use insulin less efficiently. Has the Dr. done a fasting blood glucose test, more than just a fasting finger-stick blood glucose reading? I would be very wary, no, I'd GET MYSELF TO ANOTHER DR ASAP if one reccommended elective, major abdominal surgery for " borderline " diabetes before trying anything else. If blood glucose is not quite high enough to diagnose diabetes, diet modification according to the American Diabetes Assoc. would be a sensible first step IMO. If blood glucose is sufficiently high to diagnose diabetes, diet modification and/or oral diabetic drugs make sense. This combination has controlled my diabetes so far. If the disease can't be controlled by these means, supplementary insulin via injection or pump is the next step. Diabetic Neuropathy (pain) is a complication of uncontrolled diabetes. Everyone is different, but having complications without a diagnosis of diabetes seems very odd. It might be different in a patient who had neglected her health long enough to have had undiagnosed, uncontrolled diabetes long enough to develop complications of the disease. I had *no* symptoms or complications of diabetes when I was diagnosed. I requested the tests when I was being evaluated for thyroid disease. I still don't have diabetic neuropathy, or any other complications yet. Controlling my blood glucose is key to postponing complications. I realize you asked about the surgery. Don't have any information there, but it seems like a waste of time & money, along with pain & suffering, if the same thing can be accomplished with far less expensive and invasive means. Just my way-more-than 2 cents' worth, Ann R. in TX -------------------- skyangel wrote: >> Hi all, >> I promised a friend that is in this support group >> that I would write >> and ask the group their opinion.
