Guest guest
Steady does it Many people are reluctant to admit that they need a cane or similar mobility aide. But the added independence these devices provide generally helps improve a person's lifestyle. If you’re having a problem with your balance or need help supporting your weight on your legs, it may be time to get a cane. Ask your doctor about it. Cane characteristics Generally, an adjustable aluminum cane is preferred. Folding aluminum canes are not as stable, and wooden ones are heavier and cannot be adjusted. Your healthcare provider can advise you. Involving your doctor, nurse, or physical therapist in the process has other benefits as well. A healthcare professional can help ensure that your cane is the proper type and size for you. In addition, get the help you need to use the cane correctly. For example, many people don’t realize that a cane should be positioned on their stronger side. In other words, if your left knee is the one that’s affected, you should hold the cane in your right hand. Published: May/Jun 2004
