Guest guest
Lee Try getting a shower brush to scratch with. You won't tear up the skin or have scabs.. Also scratches more skin at a time and reaches your back if it has a long handle. I got great relief from UV/B light treatments, it took several weeks with 2-3 treatment a week but the itching was gone. Guest guest
To combat the itching, my doc prefers phenobarbital in addition to urso. He says cholestyramine [sp?] tends to bond to the urso and render the urso ineffective. He also advised me against Rifampin, because it tends to be hard on the liver. The phenobarb seems to be working for me. Wim (aka )

Guest guest
I lost my itching about a month after initially going on Urso in 1990. In 2002, I had a spike in my cholesterol and took Cholestyramine. They chose it over symvastatin drugs because it caused less work for the liver. During that time my liver numbers remained level at just above normal. I know that they did not know much about PSC, at least locally, in 1990. I complained about itching and asked if it was part of the symptoms for PSC or UC and was told no. I even accused my wife of changing laundry detergents. Within a couple of years they asked me each visit if I had itching problems. I was very fortunate to have not had them except initially. Guest guest
Hi Lee, I find the Cholest. helps to stop the itching, BUT check the ingredients and see if it contains the sweetner "aspertame",if so you can do like i did, go see another DOCTOR. Aspertame is one of the most dangerous sugar subs. and i wonder what these drug manu. are thinking when they add it to the drug which is suppose to help your liver. Have you asked like i did if anybody has tried anything natural for the itching? Guest guest
> ... helps to stop the itching, BUT check the ingredients and see if it contains the sweetner " aspertame " , ... Aspertame is one of the most dangerous sugar subs. ... You can get cholestyramine (Questran) without the aspertame, but then you get more sugar. Cholestyramine is sold under a number of brand names, including Cholestyramine, Cholestyramine Light, Locholest, Locholest Light, Prevalite, Questran and Questran Light. The Light/lite versions contain sugar substitutes (usually aspertame), while the " regular " formulations contain more sucrose. In the case of Cholestyramine Powder there is 3.8g of sucrose (about 15 cal) in a scoop (9g) of powder (4g of anhydrous cholestyramine resin - the active ingredient). Cholestyramine Light has much less sucrose, 0.7g (2.7 cal) per scoop, so those avoiding sugar opt for that formulation. Other brands may vary the ratios of inert ingredients, but I believe they all are similar to Cholestyramine Powder and Cholestyramine Light. I do not like the aftertaste of artificial sweeteners so after once getting the light version, I always made sure that future orders were for the regular version. Tim R, who hope never to have to take cholestyramine again.
