Guest guest
Greetings MGB Community! Even though I sent personal thank-yous, I just wanted to say a big " public " thank you to the many people who responded to my letter concerning my daughter, Chris. Being the protective mama bear I am, I wrote to 86 former patients (!), receiving a 50% response of 43 replies. Pretty good, I thought. For those of you I did not contact, here is the letter I sent: Greetings from Illinois, We are interested in communicating with patients of Dr. Rutledge who had the Mini-Gastric Bypass a while ago. We are considering the surgery for our 16 year old daughter, who has suffered from morbid obesity her entire life, having been born with large layers of cellulite. I'm sure that few know better than you yourself how life has been for her, and we are hoping to find a long-term, lifelong solution that will allow her finally to start enjoying life without having to suffer the disgusted stares and personal attacks that she is subjected to daily. She longs for friends and a " normal " life. has been pre-approved by Dr. Rutledge and now we are awaiting an answer to our second appeal to our insurance company (Cigna), who has said that they cover bariatric surgery, but that Dr. Rutledge is out of our network. We have written a powerful letter, jam-packed with information, so we are hopeful. In the meantime, we are contacting patients like yourself who have had the surgery to learn more about the experience and what can expect as a result of the operation. Naturally we are all a little apprehensive, though hopeful. Any information that you are willing to provide will be enormously helpful and genuinely appreciated. We hope that you are happy and well since your surgery, and God bless you for coming forward and being willing to share your experience with others. Most sincerely, Debbie, Tom, and L I have recently discovered this online support community and would like to see if there are any other young people who have had the surgery, as it would be nice to set up with an electronic penpal or two. She is 16, 5'3, " weighs around 250# (and steadily gaining), and is a sensitive, cool (though shy) chicka! We have not heard back from Cigna on our appeal as of yet, but will find a way, somehow, for her to have the surgery. Best wishes to one and all! Guest guest
Hi Flo, Thanks for your very sweet words and the best of luck to you in your conitinued weight loss and good health! Truth is, Tom and I are the lucky ones, as has been a great joy in our lives. It's too bad that in our society, though, the quality of one's character takes a backseat to physical appearance. Guest guest
Hi Debbie from Illinois.. this is the other Deb from IL.... Where are you located? I am near Joliet. My heart goes out to your daughter. I know how hard it is for kids to be anything that is apart from the norm (being overweight, having braces, glasses, a learning disability or whatever). Other kids can be so mean. I know that most of them don't know the damage they cause, I wonder if they would be nicer if they had a clue. I was always overweight as a youngster, and it was not fun. I was not as heavy as but close enough. I think from all of the responses I've had, that this is a chance at a better life for her. I have not had the surgery myself yet, but I hope to have it very soon. Good luck in your journey, and if you ever want to talk, or if wants to talk to someone who understands how she feels, you can email me at Hadjab@.... Guest guest
Hi Deb from IL, I am not too far from you--we live in Naperville. Thanks for the kind words of support. Actually, all the many letters I received were supportive, save one from a very intent person who felt we were crazy pursuing this surgery. She had had the surgery and was doing well herself, but suggested that Chris just learn to diet. I thought that a bit odd, but that was only one out of 43 and we are all entitled to our opinion. I sincerely wish you the best in getting approved. Debbie in IL Where are you located? I am near Joliet. My heart goes out to your daughter. Guest guest
Hi Debbie in IL... I'm glad you found everyone to be supportive. I find that very odd that someone who had had this surgery and was doing well, especially, would think your daughter could just diet. Is it easier when you are sixteen and have been heavy all your life? I don't think so. I think it just gets worse, until you get older and have more problems. I have tried dieting so many times, and the weight always comes back on. I think it is wonderful that obese people now have an opportunity to do something more permanent! Thank God for Dr. Rutledge.. I have only heard good things about him, so he must be as good as they say! Deb in IL

Guest guest
Hi Deb: I too was an obese teen. It is incredibly painful. is fortunate to have parents who understand that this is not something she asked for. My family was not a safe haven from the mean comments. My parents loved me and meant well but clearly felt this was something I was doing over which I had control and chose not to control. You are to be commended for your parenting and for your sensitivity as a parent and as a human being! I hope that you are successful in obtaining the surgery for your daughter. I'm only 8 days post-op but I can tell you that in my mind, this is a miracle. My daughter is 32 and is getting ready to start the pre-op process. She has three beautiful children and a wonderful husband. She and her husband both went through their teens overweight. I know the pain a mother feels when her child is made fun of for being less than what others consider perfect. I trust my daughter to Dr. Rutledge. I was nervous about all three pregnancies and deliveries just as I was when she was a child and was ill. But with Dr. Rutledge...well...complete faith and trust. I know he will take care of her. Guest guest
Hi Joanne, We've lived in Naperville 3 years now and find it a GREAT place to raise a family, though I confess I still miss Ct. You might be talking about the Riverfront-- it is central to life in Naperville and has been expanded recently. Miles of beautiful trails along the river make it a fun fresh-air venue! And of course the wonderful shops and dowtown are nearby. Regards, Debbie in IL We used to go to the lake there many, many (about 40+) years ago when we lived in LaGrange. Is it still nice????
