Dear ;

As I understand it, removal of plastic stents is very common. Because plastic

stents tend to clog up, they are usually removed or replaced after a while. This

is explained in the following two articles on ERCP:

http://medicine.iupui.edu/ercp/possible_treatments.asp

http://www.asge.org/PatientInfoIndex.aspx?id=398

Sorry I can't answer your question on a " global measure or indicator to tell how

much narrowing has occurred " . However, I would suspect that MRCP images

(interpreted by an expert ... that would not include me!) would be as good an

indicator of this as any.

I hope that Suzanne has recovered well from the ERCP!

Best regards,

Dave R.

Hi ,

I’m a little surprised that they are taking it out in 2 weeks –

though it’s common for them to put one in for a while and let it stretch out

the stricture and then remove it later. There’s just no way to know from what

you said what the narrowing means in terms of progress. It depends on how much

blockage there is, how widespread, etc. See if the doctor can give you a better

idea of what to expect.

>Hi all,

My stent was reviewed after 2 weeks by my GI. He said that I will have my stent

replaced every 3 months for the next 2 years or until the duct will stay open on

its own, or the duct is replaced. Wow, that is a lot of ors!

Mine was only in for two weeks also. I’ve heard as long as six

months, but they usually clog up sooner than that.

My son had a series of stents (sometimes 2 at once) placed fairly frequently- I

think the longest one lasted for @ 3 months- he had then for almost 3 years with

many ERCPs.

except one thing. They put a stent in her main bile duct stating that it had a

dominant stricture. What surprised me is that in two weeks they are going to

take it out. Is removal of the stent common? It is not something I expected.

other ducts from the MRCP; I am trying to understand how much and what does it

means in terms of the progression of the disease.
