Guest guest
Thanks for remembering! Two years have come and gone since that big day. I am so thankful for my brother giving me my future back. Our family tradition is to invite everyone over for Liver Day to remember the occassion. It comes before thanksgiving and is less formal. This year we are playing Uke songs and playing pin the gall bladder on the Liver. Arne, and everyone, thanks for being the glue that keeps this group together. Guest guest
Thanks Arne for remembering. It's amazing how quickly and how slowly at times this year has passed. Little did I know when KU called at about 4am on Nov. 27 that I would have 3 livers in my blood type become available, have 2 offered to me, go to surgery twice and finally 48 hours later head to surgery for the real thing. The first liver was ultimately deemed to be fatty and not suitable for tx. The 2nd was given to another person higher on the list. I stayed in the hospital prior to tx for the 48 hours getting only one meal which made the wait seem very long. This year has been a huge adventure plus very educational. I'm feeling much better than prior to tx with only small issues now with pain near the BCIR and also neuropathy which my docs think is caused by one of the immunosuppressive dr Subject: Happy re-birthday!To: "Psc-Support (AT) Yahoogroups (DOT) Com" < >Date: Saturday, November 29, 2008, 7:35 AM to Barby! Guest guest
I'm enjoying this time...Tom's new liver and the celebration of Barby's and Ron's new liver...oh the holiday joy!!! (MO) Update, Ron & Suzanne-Transplant Dear friends, First of all let me say thank you to all of you who sent us well wishes last time Ron was in the hospital.......sorry I haven't responded but it has been SUCH A MONTH! Ron has been very ill but was miraculously well enough last week & we were able to travel to our youngest daughters wedding. It was a blessing!!! Three days after we arrived home the hospital called to say they had a liver for Ron. We went in at 8 this past Tues night Dec. 3rd. They started his surgery at 2:00am Wed. morn & it did not end until 2:30 pm Wed. afternoon. TWELVE HOURS OF SURGERY. It took EIGHT HOURS of the surgery to just get his old liver out. So many adhesions from his by pass & previous surgeries & his liver was very shrunken seemed to be sucked back onto the abdominal wall. Four hours was spent putting the new liver in. The transplant surgeon, Dr. Wood, said if they were all like this he wouldn't be doing transplants. They were exhausted. We finally saw him at 4 pm. He is still in transplant ICCU & not doing well at this point. Thursday night he extubated himself while having a hallucination of sorts. Then at 10am Fri. his blood pressure crashed he was in a lot of pain ...they rushed him back to surgery & when they opened him up masses of blood spilled out. He almost bled out...a number of bleeds but not due to any of the transplant surgery. Now the new liver is not totally functioning (they don't know why) & they are having trouble stabilizing him. His Pro time is still in the 20's range...his bilirubin has not come down nor some of his enzymes...his blood pressure not stable, his kidneys hardly putting out any urine. He is VERY despondent. The surgeon told me today we will be taking it hour by hour until & unless there is a change for the better soon they will be relisting him. They are giving him numerous meds, fluids, platelets & plasma....rejection drugs ...some morphine but they have to watch that as it affects his blood pressure. There is a line or IV in just about every possible plac e... the good news being that he doesn't have to be stuck. They have been unable to take him off the respirator & he will be on it for a few more days at least they say. He is just getting very swollen & edemic as the kidneys are not putting out. We remain optimistic but things aren't looking so good right now. This is the first time I have been home....needed a bath & change of clothes...have been sleeping at hospital.....but NOT TOO WELL. Many churches & friends are praying for Ron .......PLEASE include him in yours! The children are all here & they are a blessing to us. They made me come home.........but I can hardly stand it & will be returning as soon as the dryer gives forth some clean jeans & I get my bath & hair washed. I will try to update all of you if I can but I find it very hard to leave him or the ICCU waiting room. I am very frightened but have put my faith & hope in GOD & know he will carry us through this. Guest guest
Thank you dear Arnie for remembering Ron's re-birthday. He is doing remarkably well.....still working but trying hard to retire in a year or so. I follow the support group's stories & daily grind of life with this disease....and send our heartfelt love and best wishes for you each in your struggles to cope. We are thankful for the memories of Ron's tx six years ago as we again count our blessings and realize how very fortunate we are. We are sitting here in a travel trailer on our property in San Leon, TX just down the road from Galveston. We moved here five years ago, right on the bay......our house was finally torn down last week, a victim of "Ike". It looks like bombs have decimated this area. Forty years of gathered treasures blown or floated away. So, we are beginning again.......maybe a second rebirth of some kind, but I would never equate this loss of material things with the heart-rending physical and emotional journey of six years ago.....I think having survived that makes this easier to endure. We plan to spend a joyful Christmas with our friends, children & grandkids as we remember that the most important thing is.....LOVE Suzanne McPherson Associate Director of Domestic Affairs McPherson Corporate Offices

Guest guest
Suzanne, It's interesting how a crisis whether medical such as having a transplant(s) or losing possessions in a natural disaster can get us focused on the important things in life. Like your family, ours has faced more than one. We have had our house hit by a tornado 25 years ago and destroyed by fire 6 years ago.. Through God's grace we all survived but we also have become stronger in the process both as a family and as individuals. I wrote to wish your family well and to encourage you to "do the next thing" if you get to a point when you are overwhelmed with cleaning up/making decisions/etc. Blessings, Barby - KS
