Hello:

My name is Gia Gulino and I work at the National Center for

Farmworker Health (www.ncfh.org) in Buda, Texas. I wanted to take

this opportunity to invite you or anyone interested in implementing

promotora programs to attend a 2-3 day Breast and Cervical Cancer

Train-the-Trainer workshop conducted by the NCFH Cultivando la Salud

Program staff, who have years of experience developing and

coordinating promotora programs as well as training promotoras

directly.

NCFH has developed the Cultivando la Salud Breast and Cervical

Cancer Program that has proven effective in farmworker communities.

Cultivando la Salud (CLS) is a train-the-trainer breast and cervical

cancer education program designed to increase breast and cervical

cancer screening among Hispanic populations with an emphasis on

farmworker women, 50 years of age and older. It utilizes lay health

workers in health centers, as well as other organizations that

target the farmworker population, to provide breast and cervical

cancer education.

NCFH is offering workshops on the Cultivando la Salud Breast and

Cervical Cancer Education Program. It is a 2-3 day interactive

workshop that walks through the curriculum and outreach materials as

well as provides tips on how to implement the program successfully.

The workshop is not a " how-to " session on how to develop promotora

programs but rather a workshop on how to implement a breast and

cervical cancer education program in your community using the

promotora model. It is not a medical training. We will not be

giving you the latest medical research and technology advances or

cover treatment options.

The purpose of the program is to provide basic breast and cervical

cancer information at a low literacy level, that is reinforced

throughout the curriculum, so as to influence screening behaviors in

Hispanic migrant and seasonal farmworker women. The curriculum

covers basic anatomy, risk factors, signs and symptoms, as well as

early detection and screening options. It utilizes popular

education techniques, such as role plays, brainstorming, and group

work, so that those who are trained on Cultivando la Salud are

capable of effectively educating the target population, who is often

used to less formal education techniques.

Attached is a flyer with training dates here at our offices in Buda,

Texas, as well as additional information on the CLS program.

Training dates are set for December 10-12, 2003, and January 14-16,

2004. If you do not receive the attachments, please contact me

directly for the information.

If you are interested in registering for training, please contact me

as soon as possible, as there is limited space. Scholarships are

available as well, so please inquire if interested. Also, NCFH

offers direct training on CLS to promotoras at community and migrant

health centers and other organizations that work with farmworkers.

If you are interested in having one of these Local trainings for

your organization, please contact me for more information.

Please share this information with anyone who may be interested. I

apologize for any duplication of messages. Para más información en

español, llámeme gratis al 1-800-5120, ext. 5470.

Sincerely,

Gia Gulino
