Guest guest
This is so sad, Cindi. My mom attempted suicide when I was younger but fortunately was unsuccessful. I'm sending you my sympathies and best wishes, dear. *hugs* > my cousin in brooklyn...committed suicide this afternoon. she was going to > the doc tomorrow..to be checked for hashimoto's...she's been depressed and had > psychiatric disorder for years. > > her father was a suicide as was my mother (who had undiagnosed hashimoto's) > > thyroid disease can be a killer...why don't the docs understand this? > > anyway..i'd appreciate prayers for her sweet brother and their mother. > i'll be back on the forum when i'm able. > > i love you all for the support you all have given me..... > cindi > > >

Guest guest
Oh Cindi... This is devastating news. Immeasurably awful. It feels like we are related because of the horribly unneccessary suffering of this awful disease. Cindi, you have helped me more than I can say. Prayers for your cousin and aunt and for you, Dear Heart, are on their way... So so sorry, honey. .... ----- Original Message ----- my cousin in brooklyn...committed suicide this afternoon. she was going to the doc tomorrow..to be checked for hashimoto's...she's been depressed and had psychiatric disorder for years. her father was a suicide as was my mother (who had undiagnosed hashimoto's) thyroid disease can be a killer...why don't the docs understand this? anyway..i'd appreciate prayers for her sweet brother and their mother. i'll be back on the forum when i'm able. i love you all for the support you all have given me..... cindi
Guest guest
I thank you all so very much for such supportive and loving messages. I am posting below the letter i sent my two cousins on Jan. 1. The brother and I felt that this (hashimoto's) was my female cousins's problem. She was actually supposed to be going to the doctor today to have all this checked. It is noteworthy that as a child she had to take thyroid hormone. She did not know why, but could remember having to take it. Although my cousin had psychiatric problems off and on from age 18, in the last two years she had declined greatly....with a psychiatric hospitalization at that time - where they of course dosed her up with all sorts of psychotrophic drugs - and it's been very hard to penetrate thru those. We do know that her thyroid function was NEVER checked. In all the medical literature, it says to always check this...and I'm finding that they never do. they just hand out drugs. Anyway, this letter may be of interest to some of you who have had family members who were impacted by the psychiatric manifestations of Hashimoto's/hypo. Thank you all again for your prayers. It means so much to me. I'll be back.... Cindi I am addressing this to both of you because I have wanted for some time to give you both this information. Pam, we have discussed some of this but I'm not sure you have realized how important it is to thoroughly investigate it in yourself. Jimmy, it may also be applicable to you. So let me get started and just share some information with you both. I have often pondered the origin of the psychiatric problems and apparent " suicide gene " that runs in our Stanfield family. This year, I found the origin. It is indeed a gene and the gene is Hashimoto's Disease. The psychiatric problems in the Stanfield family have been caused by thyroid dysfunction without any doubt. For your information, I have included my own story of how I had BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) and its accompanying depression/anxiety/panic attacks and how this was cured with thyroid hormone replacement when I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease/hypothyroidism. From questioning of other family members, it appears your father also had BDD. In fact, I remember my father telling me " you're just like Jimmy " . And indeed, I feel like I know exactly what your father's feelings were and how difficult life would have appeared. Hashimoto's often presents primarily with psychiatric disturbance. My unexplainable depression/anxiety primarily started in my 30s and waxed and waned over the years as Hashimoto's often does. I might remind you that besides my mother and your father who died by suicide, they also had two other siblings with psychiatric problems. Leone and Martha both had depression and anxiety problems. Leone had a suicide attempt and now that I have studied this disease for a year, I know she was also a perfect clinical picture of someone with undiagnosed Hashimoto's/hypothyroidism. In fact, her death was heart failure which is the final outcome of someone untreated for hypothyroidism. And she also had diabetes, which will often accompany thyroid disorder. Martha, who died so young, also had clinical symptoms of hypo. In addition, it has now been determined that breast cancer is associated with a low level of T3, which is the active thyroid hormone. I do not believe that Jean inherited the Hashimoto's gene, but I am certain the other siblings did. Where did this originate? We do know that Granny took thyroid medication and also had another autoimmune disease, pernicious anemia. Autoimmune disease often travels in pairs. I have both the autoimmune thyroid disease and vitiligo (small white spots from loss of pigment). However, I am not certain that Granddaddy did not also have thyroid dysfunction. Autoimmune disease is interesting in that it can be a minor annoyance in the beginning stages and often becomes full-blown with illness or stress progressing into major medical issues. Not only do I know for certain that Granny had thyroid dysfunction, I also know for certain that my Mother did. The medical examiner indicated several abnormal findings about her thyroid gland. I had noted this with interest since I had been to a doctor several times requesting thyroid function tests because of other physical symptoms. I actually presented Mom's autopsy info to several doctors but received no answers. It was only after I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's myself and studied the disease in depth, that I now know she had undiagnosed Hashimoto's Disease. Not only was her thyroid gland fibrous from the disease, but she had several phyisical findings that are consistent with hypothyroidism, such as an enlarged heart and fatty liver and adrenal hyperplasia. Actually, this disease explains every mental and physical problem my Mom ever had, as it does me. I am certain now that this undiagnosed disease was the major contributor to her suicide as depression and suicidal ideation are common in Hashimoto's as well as a number of other psychiatric manifestations. Combine that with the accompanying physical problems of untreated hypothyroidism and much is explained. So again, I believe with all my heart and mind that this genetic disease explains everything about the psychiatric problems of our parents as well as those of their siblings. And we know with me, that the genetic disease has passed down to the next generation. Pam and Jimmy, it may explain much about your own lives too and that is why I felt it important to share this information. It is recommended that when one family member is diagnosed with Hashimoto's, that other family members be tested. The two tests for Hashimoto's thyroid antibodies would be: Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) and Thyroid Antithyroblobulin. The thyroid function tests are: TSH, Free T4 and Free T3. My summary gives more information about thyroid function tests. I know how the three of us have been impacted by our parent's death. But I have been able to come to peace with it now that I know my Mom also had Hashimoto's. I can not begin to convey how much it explains about her erratic behavior over the years. It also makes me feel very sorry that no doctor ever discovered this in her. One major physical problem she had was facial and ear pain. This is very common in hypo patients as hypo fluid swells the ear canal. It hurts to think of the numerous surgeries she had trying to find the origin of her symptoms to cure her pain. The surgeries never did help her and I remember that the week before she died, she told me she was " through with doctors " . I understand that statement very well now. I feel much the same. Doctors have kept me sick and feeling unwell for most of my life. Even though I am now fairly stable, the result of untreated autoimmune disease for over 20 years has caused lots of physical problems. I hope you have found this information interesting and maybe it will provide some answers to you about your father and perhaps even your own life. Please let me know if you have any questions. I've spent much of the last year studying this disease and in particular, the psychiatric manifestations. I've been fortunate to help several folks who had been misdiagnosed with psychiatric disorder when in fact they have Hashimoto's Disease. That is always worthwhile as I do not want anyone to suffer as I have or as my family members have. I believe this disease has taken a great toll on our families. God bless you both. Guest guest
Oh Cindi, that is so sad. You know you have my prayers. SO much of this familial stuff.. I wish my own Mother could be here to see this, maybe she would not have taken her own life. I am just so thankful for all the support lists I have turned to over the years that got ME through that horrible depression. I wish we could reach them all, but unfortunately, we can't. *Artistic Grooming * Hurricane, WV Fat cat? Diabetes? Guest guest
Cindi, Sooo very sorry to hear that! From your lettter, you know you did everything you could to help her to get help. It is terrible that most docs don't even run the (inaccurate) TSH test in psycological disorders. I know my dr that I currently use decided to run the tsh in the first place on me because I told her I was " losing it " . (A previous doc had just dismissed me when I suggested maybe that was my problem before.) My prayers are with you and your family!!
