First you go to the social security administration and fill out an

application. They will ask you to sign a number of releases for all

your doctors. After about 3-6 months, they come back and have you go

to THEIR doctors, and about 3-6 months after that you will get a

determination (generally a NO, then you go through reconsideration and

an administrative law hearing)

In 91 I was approved for Social Security no problem. Then I went back

to college to train for a job I can handle, and went back to work and

off SSD... and once I became too ill to work at THAT job, I had to go

through the whole thing all over again. I'm now waiting for an

administrative law hearing, which should take place sometime this summer.

Mandy,. initially you can file everything over the phone. They will also

give you all the information and send you an outline of all the things you

told them within a few weeks. You have to pretty much check it, sign it and

return within a certain period. Then they send a whole list of things for

you to fill out, it's like a book, a separate page for each pain and then

again you have to send back within a certain period. Then it takes 5 - 6

months to get a reply. I did it all over the phone.

Telephone: they will then direct you to your local office.

Two pieces of advice:

1. file everything within the period they're telling you.

2. be consistent with the information you give. Make sure whatever you give

them over the phone is the same as later on paper. They do keep records of

the conversation and ask you for reconfirmation of what you said. Don't add

things later. Before you call make sure you have a list of everything you

need to tell them. Keep copies of everything you send.

Also, don't get yourself worked up about the whole process. It's not worth

it. Treat it as if though it was your daily routine: washing your teeth,

brushing your hair. It helps get through the long wait and the paperwork you

have to fill out over and over again.

Good luck.
