does anyone know if the Armour is made the same now as way back when - in

other words, is the strength/potency the same? I guess i was just wondering how

some folks could take 30 grains. yikes.

Before WWII Natural thyroid had more variation in potency. One paper

I found said that 1-3 grains in the 1930s was equivelent to 3 to 5

grains today. But, I think there was quite a bit of variation due to

differing processing methods. The first thyroid extracts

(injectable) made in the late 1800s had a lot of variation and I

think I read of one or two patients that were killed by preparations

that were too strong. There was also one batch of Armour made that

had no thyroid in it. I believe it happened around WWII. They

measured potency by iodine levels and one batch was made that had

all the thyroid hormone destroyed, but the iodine was still there.

This has been used by the Synthroid manufacturer to promote the idea

that Armour was risky to use. But, Synthroid has actually had far

more potency problems than Armour. The potency variations of Armour

or natural thyroid were a problem in the old days before WWII, but

since most people adjusted doses by symptoms, they could adjust

their dose accordingly.

People actually died who were started on 30 grains and this is why

they quit doing it. But, the majority amazingly didn't die. It

points out that thyroid is not quite as dangerous as doctors would

have you think.
