So my question is, is it worth > continuing the probiotic she is on with 3x a day antibiotics? ===================== I don't know what antibiotic Pearl is on, but I have been taking Xifaxan (3x daily) for the past couple of years. I started it originally for hepatic encephalopathy, and was stunned when it had the unexpected side-effect of knocking my Crohn's Colitis into TOTAL remission. It has worked like a charm for me and I no longer take any probiotics unless I'm on a broad-spectrum antibiotic. There was a study done (in 2006, I think) at Cornell's school of medicine which showed that approx. 52% of Crohn's patients will go into remission when put on Xifaxan. It has certainly worked for me. My last colonoscopy (this past May) showed my colon was not only free of any bleeding ulcerations (previously there had been literally hundreds), but there was also no scar tissue. No sign whatsoever of any colitis at all!!! My Dr. then ran a blood test for antibodies to see if the disease was still lurking or if it had miraculously vanished without a trace. Well, it showed there are lots of antibodies, so we know the Crohn's is still there, just completely silent at this time. Xifaxan has been a miracle for me. Not only is the Crohn's in total remission, but I can eat fruits and veggies again (after only 26 years of not being able to touch them). Guest guest
, It must be wonderful for Pearl to be free form Crohn's symptoms finally. I take it that Pearl is not wanting to take the probiotic, since you imply she is currently taking both. If this assumption is right there appears to be no problem with taking both together (check with your doctor or pharmacist), but if Pearl doesn't want to take the probiotics, try stopping itaking them. Pearl will change her mind pretty quick if the symptoms come back. Ian We have stumbled upon an antibiotic that works for Pearl's Crohn's symptoms. We were one step away from an ileostomy when she got an ear infection and was prescribed an antibiotic and her Crohn's symptoms went away just like that. So her doctor just prescribed an antibiotic that targets the gut but is in the same class as the other one and it is working beautifully so far. So my question is, is it worth continuing the probiotic she is on with 3x a day antibiotics? Thanks in advance for any input anyone may have!mom to Pearl, PSC/AIH/Crohn's -- Ian Cribb P.Eng. Guest guest
If she does not continue on the Probiotics, all the good bacteria as well as bad will be killed off in her body and she will be prone to recurrent infections and possibly C-Diff which is brought on by strong antibiotics.....it is a viscious cycle. Also the probiotics do more than just fight infection, they seal the gut helping to prevent bacteria and viruses invading the colon or the liver. Probiotics also increase the peristalsis of the gut and prevent gastric reflux and constipation:) MARNA >
Guest guest
hi - Braden gets both antibiotics and probiotics every day. He is now on either vancomycin or gentamicin (rotates weekly) and culturelle. He was on xifaxan for years but that stopped working a while ago, but was good for quite a while for him. The probiotic that has worked best for Braden is the culturelle. He has been through quite a few different ones and the ones that were supposed to be the best- especially VSL #3 were not right for him. The bifiudus strains of probiotics are not good for him because of his small bowel bacterial overgrowth. What antibiotic is Pearl on ? I'm really glad to hear that something is helping Pearl !!!! Guest guest
Lori and Carolayn, I'm pretty sure Pearl is on the same antibiotic. I don't know why this wasn't recommended to us a long time ago. Frustrating. Anyway, I'm glad to hear it works for other people as well. She is barely hanging on with it, but she is and that's all I'm asking for, for now! Pearl is on Floraster(Florastar?) and doesn't seem to be having any negative side effects, but I don't know that they are helping either. I've never known. Pearl was having loads of live foods when she got sick, so I don't know if they help, or if they hurt. Maybe she was getting the wrong kind at the time. VSL#3 did seem to hurt her. She got a lot of UTIs when she was on it. What does it 'look' like when a probiotic helps? mom to Pearl, PSC/AIH/Crohn's > > hi - > Braden gets both antibiotics and probiotics every day.
