Hi all. I called a lawyer about filing for disability and SSI, but he said since

I'm pretty young that it could take away my benifits when I'm older. So, I

haven't persuied it. He said I would have a good case considering all the things

I have been diagnosed with. I just thought I'd give you the only experiance I've

had with SSI.

I work for the state welfare dept so I deal with people on ssi and

ssd all the time. I know a little bit about how it works. I am not

saying the lawyer you talked to is wrong but that from my experience

I don't believe that.

SSI is Supplemntal securtiy income, this is for people who are

disabled but have not worked enough in their lifetime to draw ss

disability. SSD is social security disability and that is when you

have worked enough (put enough money into the system) to draw on what

you have put in. It has to do with how many quarters of work you

have. SSI is bascily federal welfare the max SSI is $545.00 per

month. You automaticaly have Medicaid when you are on SSI. You can

drawn Food stamps when you are on ssi and the amount would depend on

the state you live in. In arizona usually ssi reciepints get $10.00

a month in FS, but it depends on # in your household and other income

you have plus your rent and utility expenses. SSD amounts depend on

how much you have worked and put in to the system. You can go to the

social securtiy web site and fill out a form and they will send you a

letter telling you what you would be able to draw on SSD if you were

to become disabled at this point in time. On ssd you are eligible

for Medicare after 1 year.

Wht the lawyer might have been saying is that if you continue to work

you will draw more from ssd then you would at this time. Hope this
