Does sunlight help our thyroids??

>Little is known about the effect of light on the thyroid in humans.

This caught my eye since the last few weeks, I have wondered about

it's affect. There have been a few articles out lately pronouncing

the good health effects of light and sunlight. For one, it helps

product Vit D in our bodies. Second, there was an article about the

effect of light on spinal pain of individuals. Those who were in

darkened rooms had less relief from pain than those who were in

bright rooms and pushed near the windows.........

So, you have to wonder about sunlight and our thyroid

function........

Selenium is vital for thyroid function, I agree - but Vit D is

vastly underestimated, IMHO. It plays a role in autoimmune disease,

depression and proper expresion of both progesterone and thyroid

hormones.

I recently got blood work done which showed I was deficient in Vit D

(and phosphorus). Since then, I've been trying to get a bit of sun

every day. Just in case though, I'm also supplementing w/ 400iu per

day and most recent results show improvement.

There's so much to keep track of...

How exactly is sunlight supposed to help your thyroid? I lay out in the sun

all summer. I don't feel any differently during the winter when I spend endless

days inside. I'm just curious what it's supposed to do. TIASue in Colorful

Carol, I'm taking 2000 IUs of D3 a day! Then again, I live up north

where there's minimal sunshine in winter. I'm aiming for 114, I'm

sitting at 72 right now, which while 'normal' is no where near

optimal.

I've found a big difference since I upped my dose (I was taking 800

IUs when tested in December). I'm also on natural progesterone.

Well don't keep me in suspense.....whats the name of the book?? This

is truely something I have never heard before. The only reason I can

come up with off the top of my head is that vit D expresses one of

the genes associated with the thyroid, I would really be interested

in his perspective on this.

eric, that's part of his point - it expresses both thyroid and

progesterone, which works in tandem with thyroid and against

estrogens. It helps T3 bind to the receptor. A deficiency in one of

the 3 can cause irregularities in the others - they must all be

optimal for health.

The book is called Down's Syndrome and Vitamin Therapy by Kent

MacLeod (he's the director of the Wellness Hospital here in Ottawa,

also a compounding pharmacist. www.wellnesshospital.com )

I learned something yesterday leafing through it - there's a

connection between malabsorption in the small intestin and hypoT.

FWIW, I'm on 2000 IUS of D3 (make sure you're only taking D3 - D2 is

not as good).

I had vit D tested and came back w/in the 'normal' range, but not

optimal. I was worried at such a high dose but some research pulled

up a few interesting facts - that 1000 IUs of D3 is safe and

effective on a daily basis.

and a chart that showed what to take to get to the optimal range if

you know your current level:

i read an article a while back..about SAD and low thyroid...some study they

did on folks in alaska or somewhere about that....and the study showed an

same with me, Alyce. every dang thing in my life. it's truly amazing.

i actually wrote up my story about all this...mostly for my benefit (but I

also gave a copy to my new doctor).....and I outlined everything I'd had from

childbirth on (age 23)...to now (age 49)...and how it all had resolved with

thyroid hormone. And it was a LONG list...that never had to happen.
