Guest guest
> Tish, > So am I reading right that you would suggest treating the adrenals first? > That's were I'm going to start. And then see how my thyroid does. _________________________ First, I would read " Adrenal Fatigue, the 21st Century Syndrome " or maybe this page http://www.fred.net/slowup/tint01.html and decide if you think you may have low adrenal function. Then, if you have these symptoms, I would definitely start with adrenal support. You can do this by ordering IsoCort from vitaminMD.com or TheWayUp on the web or by taking 1 teaspoon of Licorice root in a tea. To do IsoCort, start with 4 to 8 tablets a day total. Take 1 to 2 tablets every 4 hours. IF you think your adrenal thing is mild just to 1 tablet every 4 hours. If you think it is more severe do 2 tablets every 4 hours. For licorice root, take 1 teaspoon in a tea every 4 hours. You can use other glandulars made from cow or sheep adrenals, but I don't know the dose for most. Nutri+meds has one. The dose for it is about 4 to 6 tablets a day, broken up into 4 equal doses. Do adrenal support for 1 week. Then start the thyroid at a low dose - 15 mg or 1/4 grain. Continue with the adrenal support. If you have low adrenal function, you will start to have symptoms in 10 days to two weeks following beginning thyroid. These will include fatigue, poor sleep, palipitations, hypoglycemia, headache and others. If you do not have any symptoms of this type in two weeks, then I would assume you don't have much adrenal issues and I would then taper off the adrenal support slowly over a few weeks. IF you do develope problems, then stay on the adrenal. If you are on 1 tablet 4 times a day, you can increase it to 2 tablets 4 times a day, if you feel pretty miserable and are having bad enough problems. You can stay on adrenal support for 4 months to 2 years as you slowly work up your thyroid dose in 15 mg increments every two weeks if you feel you need it. But, I would not stay on it any longer than needed. It is very hard to get off of the longer you are on it. If you have been on it for over 4 weeks, then you must taper off slowly of several weeks or even more than that. Be regular about the adrenal support don't miss doses and keep good timing on doses. Otherwise this will give you problems with your adrenals and can mess up your thyroid meds and give you hyper symptoms. One way to know for sure you have hypo or have adrenal problems is if you start to feel bad and develope problems with thyroid mdication. If you are really sensitive to small doses of thyroid, that's a dead giveaway that you have either hypothryoidism, adrenal fatigue or both. Healthy people will hardly notice anything from taking thyroid and they can usually take quite high doses with no problems. Just go very slowly and work your thyroid dose up until you feel good. Raise 15 mg or 1/4 grain every two weeks untill you approach 3 grains. Then slow down to a raise every 4 weeks. If you experience any problems with raises, slow down before making any more. Wait 4 weeks or more. Or you may have to drop your dose down untill you recover before another attempt at a raise. Use the information on these pages to guide you with dose raises. http://www.drrind.com/tempgraph.asp http://www.thyrophoenix.com/self_monitor.htm http://www.fudgedesign.co.uk/tuk/treat/glandulars.htm Use your symptoms as a guide as to whether another dose raise is needed. You may find that you will feel worse and get more hypo on the lower doses of thyroid. Just stay the course with tiny raises as you can tolerate them. Many people will not feel good or start to see improvements untill their doses get above 3 grains. Studies found that people did not get a rise in metabolic rate from thyroid untill the doses got up to 3 to 5 grains. Sometimes low doses less than 3 grains will make you more hypo. It has to do with the effect of medication on the pituitary. This happened to me. My old doc used to say that sometimes you have to feel worse before you can get better. So, plan on a period of not feeling well untill you get your thyroid dose up to optimum. Maybe you will be lucky and not have any problems. Good luck. For additional clarification for our new folks, you can also have some of the above even without low functioning adrenals if you stay on such a low duse for 10 days to 2 weeks and longer...because your hypo can return with a vengeance on very low doses. It's too bad we don't have a quick adrenal test to confirm or rule it out immediately. Hopefully folks will try out the pupil test to give additional info. Additionally to new folks here, please don't assume that everyone has low functioning adrenals and needs adrenal support. Many folks here do not need adrenal support. But those that do, definitely need it, and it makes a huge difference in their ability to handle Armour. Tish is a good resource if you need it.
