Guest guest
I've had a ferritin test done recently, because mine was low at one point (55) it's now 96, and coming along nicely. Low iron stores and hypoT often go hand in hand; you need adequate iron for your thyroid hormones to work well, the balance is important. I would get a ferritin and a serum iron test; often when one is low and one is high your treatment is different, it's good to know both of them. Have you also had your progesterone / estradiol checked, ? Low levels of progesterone can comprimise the effectiveness of your thyroid meds and can manifest as feeling tired, brain fog, night sweats, inability to lose fat - which can be low progesterone or high estrogen. fixing the balance helps correct a lot of this; it also helps your thyroid meds work better. As with thyroid you want your free hormones tested, usually saliva or urine testing. And as with thyroid you typically need a special doctor to get these done, or you can order the saliva testing yourself online. HTH Nat > > Does anyone have suggestions for testing of iron levels? Guest guest
What's the difference between a ferritin and a serum iron test? I thought a serum ferritin test was a blood iron test. I had my estradiol tested recently and it was 111.3 (7.6-42.6) > > > > Does anyone have suggestions for testing of iron levels? Guest guest
Serum iron is the iron in your blood, ferritin is the iron stored in your cells - one is the reserve (ferritin). If the reserve is low then you're on your way to being anemic, because your body is pulling out the iron it needs and there's nothing left in reserve. If your blood iron is low and your ferritin is high it just means that something caused your iron to dip, you gave blood, you had your period, etc - you can have low serum iron and not be anemic if your ferritin is OK. > > > > > > Does anyone have suggestions for testing of iron levels?
