Humar's appointment, announced

yesterday, follows a tumultuous period at UPMC's

world-renowned transplant program. The center's most

recent chief, Dr. Amadeo Marcos, resigned in March,

one day before UPMC announced the live-donor liver transplant review…..

This announcement has me more shocked (and dismayed) than anything I

can remember.

Dr. Humar was my surgeon at Univ. of Minnesota hospital for my two

transplants in 2000. I regard him as the man who saved my life when My

hepatic artery became occluded one month after the first Transplant. I

have never experienced anything like the atmosphere in my hospital room

when He entered. To say he improved morale and inspired confidence

would not do justice.

I'm having difficulty absorbing this news. Of course, I do not plan on

returning to the hospital in an emergency situation at any time, but I

am realizing what he meant to me ever since 2000.

I realize that it was inevitable that he would move up in the world of

transplantation. And I also knew that University of Minnesota would not

be the place where he would lead the country in advancing the field,

given the political climate in the state. We no longer want to lead the

country. We only want to spare certain people having to pay their

rightful taxes.
