Guest guest
Nita, I have had Tinitus (ringing) bilaterally for several years. The more intense my URQ pain the louder it is. I have also noticed pitch changes with the severity of my itching. Liver toxicity can cause Tinitus so I have just figured that when the PSC is hitting the hardest my ears dislike me the most. Going a step further though, I am also IgA deficent which means I have poblems with ear and sinus infections, so far my IgG and IgM have remained Okay. IgA lines all of our mucus membrains to assists us in fighting infections, which is why I personally, think that my white blood cell count does not tend to go up when I have infections until they get really bad. But that's off topic. Some medications can effect your ears also but at the moment I can not recall what they are. I am having a really bad memory day. My friend has Lupus and RA and her hearing is shot from her meds. Hope this helps some. Guest guest
I’ve experienced “the Taos hum” since 2004 (not a joke) – just the left ear. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taos_hum I suspect it’s age more than anything else. Arne UC 1977, PSC 2000 Alive and well in Minnesota So now I'm wondering if anyone else on the group has trouble with their ears, and could it also be related to this whole thing. Guest guest
Hi Arne, Could be. My ENT says it’s unusual to have hearing loss along with the humming, particularly in one ear only. Have you lost any hearing in that ear? Nita

Guest guest
Nita, Hi! I've been to the ear doctor several times complaining that I feel like I can't hear out of my right ear at times (which also makes me feel like I'm having trouble swallowing for some reason). Anyhow, they keep checking but can't find any reason for it even though it's driving me crazy. I never thought about it being auto-immune or PSC related before. Maybe I'll bring up the possibility of it with them. Thanks for the thought! Sandi in VA
Guest guest
You might try an OTC remedy. My wife struggled with your symptom for years (ENT, neurologist, etc.). Her sister (RN) suggested taking Benadryl for a couple of days. Turned out to be a “stuffed up” Eustachian tube (unknown cause, possibly undiagnosed allergy). What a waste of time, energy, stress and money! Arne UC 1977, PSC 2000 Alive and well in Minnesota From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Sandi Pearlman Nita, Hi! Guest guest
Hi Sandi, Did they do a hearing test? My hearing loss definitely shows up on a hearing test. Nita ============= Hi! Guest guest
Hi, Nita! No, I haven't had a hearing test done yet. It's not all the time that I can't hear out of the ear, but it's definitely a couple of times a day...kind of like as if there's something blocking my ear except that there isn't if that makes sense...does that make any sense? Guest guest
Hi Sandi, Yes, that makes perfect sense – mine feels much of the time like there’s cotton blocking my hearing. Not that the outside feels like it has cotton, just the hearing is muffled. Then a lot of the time it feels like blocked Eustachian tubes, so I keep trying to clear them. Guest guest
Nita It would be a good idea to see an ear, nose, throat doc to check out your hearing. I had a similar problem years ago and received a dx of a patent (open) eustachian tube. He said it might be caused be a weight change, there is a small pad of fat near it that can affect how the tube works. It used to make me head feel like an echo chamber when I spoke or especially when I sang. You could also have a middle ear infection, and you don't want to leave that untreated. Take Care MizKit RE: hearing... Hi Sandi, Yes, that makes perfect sense – mine feels much of the time like there’s cotton blocking my hearing.
