I occasionally have dreadful swelling (elephant ankles) and the doctor tells

me no one knows why, but I could wear support hose. Yeah, if my hands didn't

hurt to pull them up and it didn't put my hips out of joint, I am sure it

would work as I wore support hose for years and years until it just got too

painful.

I went through a real bad period where my varicose veins changed all on their

own and I haven't had swelling since. So I don't know any more about it than

the doctor. At least, I don't charge.

There is some argument, I am finding, about whether or not FM is autoimmune.

I have a positive ANA, myself.

Do you have a positive ANA, how about rheumatoid factors? When were they

last run?

Just because you have FM does not mean you are free of other autoimmune

problems. I am not an expert, but from my limited reading, it would seem

that FMS and CMP are frequently overlying a more worrisome, more troublesome

and progressive autoimmune disorder.

You need to go back to the rheumatologist and ask for some other tests. It

is possible that this is not just FMS, or in fact may be something else

altogether. I walked around believing this was MS for three years! There

is a reason they call it " practicing " medicine.

Hi...

A thought came to me while reading your e-mail. Two summers ago I woke with

great pain in my fingers and toes. Just the bed sheet sitting on my hands &

feet drove me to tears. Anyway, after some blood tests my doctor told me

that I had " gout " (sp?). He told me that this sometimes happens with fibro

patients. Maybe you had something like that flare up in you. I'm not

saying that that is what you had, but the swelling aspect you mentioned

kinda got me to thinking.

-- Thanks and Question

Thanks to all for the warm welcomes. It's really nice

to know that there are people who understand!!!

My question is this...my dr. has told me, and the

rheumatologist has told me, that fibro is not

associated with any swelling. I saw the

rheumatologist on Saturday, and while I was still at

the office, after the visit, as I was visiting the

ladies room, my wrist started hurting. I rubbed it a

little, and it hurt worse. I looked at it and it was

all swollen up. This happened in the time it took to

walk to the ladies room and out again! Now it is

bruised and swollen and painful, and my left wrist is

slightly swollen. My question is, " What's up with

that? " It scares me, because I know I did not injure

myself in anyway, yet I am injured. I do not have any

type of arthritis or rheumatism or any inflamatory

disease, AND, just to be on the safe side, I'm on one

course of steroids " just in case " I do have any

swelling in my joints or tendons, since I did have

pain. I have one pill left of 11 to take. Can't

figure this one out. I began having a panic attack in

the tub yesterday, imagining I had broken my wrist and

had bone cancer...my f-i-l just died of bone cancer

last November at age 59. I was taking care of him all

the time, taking him to his appoitments, giving him

shots and medications, the whole works. He died in

his sleep, my husband found him, he was not expected

to die, his dr. said his cancer was not terminal.

Anyway, my irrational fear sets in, that I caught

cancer from him, although I know it's impossible, and

I've just had every test under the sun and know I

don't have cancer. My husband had to tell me, you

don't have cancer, you're fine, there's nothing wrong.

My f-i-l's first sign of bone cancer was back pain

and x-ray showed cracked vertebrae that he had no idea

when or how it happened. It's just like a bad night

mare.

Thanks again for letting me vent. What a great place

this is!

I think I would of walked ma lil' happy butt back in there and say LOOK!!

look at this and tell me what is causing incidents like this to

happen....Doc!!!...lol

but thats just me...lol, but I wonder what would cause that to happen..??

What did your RA Titer come back?? That is interesting your body would

swell, but ya know I had the same incident when I was diagnosed with Fibro.

Here's the story

I was working at Cracker Barrel as a cashier..standing on my feet for 8 - 10

hours a night. well one night my legs and feet started hurting terribly bad

and every hour I was going back to the managers office to get Tylenol and

advil...or whatever I could get my hands on..well by the time 9:30 rolled

around I could no longer walk...I was litterally stuck in one place..I

couldn't bend my knees....they had swelled to the size of watermelons...along

with my ankles...they called my b/f at the time and he drove down and picked

me up and drove me back home because I litterally couldn't walk....I couldn't

bend at any of my joints below my hips. It was horrible...so I went to family

doc...they ordered blood test. RA factor came back positive so went to a

Rheumy a month later RA Titer then came back neg. so they diagnosed me with

Fibro.

I usually don't have too much swelling now days, but I did when first

Diagnosed....it was bad and very painful also. So I understand the swelling

thing, but doesn't know why that happens either. I feel for ya girl. Hugzz

hope you feel better.

Hi there,

Quick email, first day at back at school here.

I always suffer from swelling hands, knees and feet. And yet the blood tests

showed no athritic swelling.... So he just said it was the Fibro.
