Guest guest
Marie~ I am able to garden, but during the summer I have a disease that doesn't allow me to be able to do extensive gardening when it is hot out. Neurocardiogenic syncope has basically messed up my internal thermometer and my bloodpressure. I do plant a veggie garden in the early spring and hubby does weed it for me. We have a ton of tomatoes this year. =-) Usually the kids help in the planting, but this year was a late planting season so we were in a rush to get it done. We are planning to put stone around the tree in the front yard and plant perennials, annuals, and fall flowers. Thanks for the planting tips! They will be helpful. Feel free to come to Columbus to help me...LOL....ehehehe....Take care!!! ~
Guest guest
having FM does not mean you can't garden...oh the fun of therapeutic adventures! decrease the labor intensive parts, use lots of mulch, grass clipping are great. don't till by hand, plan ahead, put several sheets of newspaper on low cut grass, clear debris, layer with lots of grass clippings or bags of mulch, let cook for a season, check in several months if its now workable soil, adding alfalfa pellets (rabbit food) brings more earth worms to help, keeping it moist. my FM does not keep me from having a huge perennial flower garden all around the house. I'd love to share seeds if anyone lives near Cincinnati. its my outlet for FM. you can SEE your success or take out your frustrations! even if i'm sore the next day I love looking at it. and no one would believe what my body really is dealing with, my way to act " normal " my sister in law has a shoulder problem, we had her lay plastic bags of mulch and top soil along her garage wall. she never dumped them on newpaper and prettied it up like I suggested, it sat from late summer to the next spring. she wanted my son to come dump out her bags and till the top soil in, and cover with mulch after she planted. he was busy, I went over and was able to do it easily! don't use artificial fertilizers or chemicals, you'll breath them or get them on your skin. there are lots of natural alternatives and you'll have more butterflies and hummingbirds since there will be more of a balance. there is a company I get my stuff from and your kids can walk on the lawn right after treatment, no warning signs like chem lawn etc. by not killing the natural life in the soil, you'll also be protecting the earth a bit. in class I had a few students who got FM from chemical exposures. one was gardening a lot, the sprayer blew up in her face and coated her in the stuff, she got sick, her liver reacted and she's in process of getting the stuff out of her system. another good friend had a company come spray for termites and they accidentally dumped the stuff in a heating duct so it poisoned the whole family. they had to move out, it messed up her thyroid and she's on disability with bad FM. by doing activities like gardening you are showing your children that you are a survivor, and letting them help teaches them a lot and they love the companionship. I come out of the garage with my cart and spade and the neighbor kids come running to fight over who gets to help Mrs AUs. and they like the popsicle treats. its more time consuming to let them and messier but I love to watch them. its what you make of it. I guess most parents think I'm a bit different, I wont tell them I have FM but I do dress up on holidays in costumes for parties, my little bo peep is their favorite, I carry a stick to help walk with bows, hold my tiny poodle and they line up to hold her or the stick. so you go with your fun things! that's what its about, working from your ABILITIES and it feels so good to have something to show for yourself! email me privately for the companies I've found for non toxic yard uses if you have trouble. I spray Monty's Joy Juice a lot. I have a big plastic box for my fruit and veggie scraps to compost and its full of earth worms, they turn it into castings I use for fertilizer naturally and its free stuff once you buy the worms! I use the stuff from our fish pond too, it has to go some place, they sell it as fish emulusion in the stores. I'll have lots of fish that will soon need homes, mine keep having babies-koi, shebunkins, comets etc. on a hot day its fun to sit in the pool and let the fish nibble, not good for FM on a cold day. as with any project, use good body mechanics, pace yourself, use tools that don't cause extra strain, knee cushions or little carts to sit on help, and don't try to get it done in a day, God took 6 and he rested too!
