Guest guest
Bobbi, From what I can read it is a transjugular venous biopsy. It is done for patients who may have a coagulation issue. My last one was done this way. They make a cut in the right side of the neck and insert a needle into the jugular vein and advance it into the liver (hepatic vein). My physician told me he preferred these as they gave a more representative sample than a standard biopsy. Actually I felt less with this kind than the standard kind. I was awake through the entire thing but drugged enough not to care. I had absolutely no pain. The Interventional Radiologist who did the biopsy said that they are safer because there is almost no possibility of bleeding. Good luck to you and Chris. I like to be informed. However I have not been able to find much of anything about this type of biopsy other than it is through the hepatic vein. is having one tomorrow, assuming his INR is better. The last time he had a liver biopsy, they did the standard one through his side. Apparently this kind is less painful. I just wanna know what they're gonna do to him. He, however has NO interest in knowing. He'll be happily in a drug induced la la land.
Guest guest
Either one sounds completely unpleasant! I'll just be glad when they get it done so they can give us SOME indication of what's going on and FIX it! I'm ready for my husband to start healing!!!! They drained 11 liters yesterday by the way! Guest guest
My son also had a transjugular liver biopsy at the end of January. If we are correct in assuming this is the same as an intravascular biopsy, I can tell you that his experience was painless. While he was given sedation, he had to remain conscious because they told him when to take a deep breath, etc. He came out of it very well and said he felt no pain. They performed this type of biopsy because he was also considered a bleed risk. We wish you all the best. Guest guest
-----Original Message----- On Behalf Of Joe Berry The Interventional Radiologist who did the biopsy said that they are safer because there is almost no possibility of bleeding. Ken had his 7-9th (maybe more) transjugular biopsy this past week. No pain, but believe me it can bleed! At one point Ken turned his head and bright red shooting pulsating blood came pouring out. Blood is pretty old school for us now, so I remained sitting, reading the paper and betting my daughter I could get the blood out of his T-shirt (I did!) The nurses moved fast and were able to stop it before it became a real nasty problem. Still the best way to go, no pain and because centers are doing more of them today than years ago, it’s just as safe as traditional biopsy. Barb in Texas - Together in the Fight - Whatever it Takes! Guest guest
Thanks for the info. We're still waiting! He IS going to have the biopsy today but they have to fit him so who knows when. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Poor guy's been NPO most of the week. His stepdad said he looks like a POW! He's nothing but skin and bones. The good news is, all of his labs were much better. He said the doctors seemed pretty happy with where they are now. I'll just be glad to get the results of the biopsy. I'll keep you posted! Guest guest
Bobbi,I assume they are going into the liver through the veins because they have easier access through them because of his recent transplant? I don't know for sure, but that would be my guess! Ian I am know as the Queen of research. I like to be informed.
