Notify your doctor. This may be and indication of an allergy to the drug.

Queasiness is a common side-effect of antibiotics, since they kill off the

body's natural flora as well as the bacteria causing the infection. Eating

yogurt with live bacillus in it will help restore your body's natural

balance while taking antibiotics.

Shortness of breath is not an normal side effect, and if it continues I

would definitely notify your doctor asap and ask his or her

advice. Ultimately it's up to you -- Cipro *is* a big gun on the

antibiotic front, and it's not uncommon for people to discover

allergies. Personally I stop taking anything that gives me respiratory

difficulties, because I tend to view that as at least a mild allergy. I

recently completed a course of Cipro, and had no problems, but one Claritin

D and I was wheezing with lacenating chest pains, and believe me, I never

took another.

If you feel concerned in any way, I'd call your doc and ask. There are so

many antibiotics on the market; they can find you another that hopefully

will not have this same effect. If you've reacted badly to Cipro, you may

not tolerate Levaquin or other related drugs. Be on the watch when taking

other broad-spectrum antibiotics, and for ciprofloxacin and other drugs in

the quinolone class of antimicrobial agents.

Best,

Em

I've taken Cipro before with no problems. But if you have

breathing problems with any medicine, you need to get off

it immediately. Actually, most anti-biotics make me itch.

Bactrim made me itch so badly that my whole body was

bruised from scratching and when I walked, it felt like I

was walking on nails.

My sister is an R.N. and a Respiratory Therapist. She said

the worst allergic reaction is your throat closing up, and

it sounds like you are coming close to that. If you can't

get ahold of your doctor, call any pharmacist and describe

your symptoms. I bet they tell you to stop taking it.

Em,

Thanks so much for the advice. I just hate to stop taking it,

because it's really put a stop to my agony. One morning I was

doubled over with pain from the infection, when I got the medication

into me later, the pain faded. I guess if I am allergic though, I

won't be able to stay on it. I'll call my doctor tomorrow.

Interesting you should mention claritin d caused you problems, I

take it everyday with no side effects. Thanks!

The last time I took it I swelled up, couldn't breathe, had anxiety attacks

etc.

I called my pharmacy and they said that if I could live with it, to just

keep taking it so I did (I have now changed pharmacies..geez) but now I list

it as a drug I'm allergic to because I will never, ever, never take it again

I would call the doc and tell them..there are other drugs available for

bladder infections

Just a little remark about claritin...my daughter goes to a

specialist in allergies and he told me claritin is about as worthless

as sugar pills. I'm sure claritin d has decongestant in it, but same

claritin med. She's allergic to everything (including her own sweat)

and zyrtec works for her. She used allegra with some results, but

her zyrtec keeps her from breaking out.

Stop taking the medication and notify your doctor immediately. Your

shortness of breath concerns me. Do you feel as if your windpipe is

closing off?

Allergy is a possibility. Please take care of yourself!

I take cipro for bladder infection of which I have had quite a few lately. I

have had no side effects at all and I can manage to get side effects from

most medication. I would call the doctor.

Take care,

Hi ,

Spoke to my doctor today, but she can't say conclusively the cipro

is what's bothering me. I am in the middle of a full blown allergy

flare, you might say. My head feels like it weighs twenty pounds and

I've got buckets of mucus draining down my throat, plugging my nose,

and making my face ache. Of course I can't take allergy meds before

my surgery on Monday, so I will be taking benadryll. I can be short

of breath while draining, so that makes it more confusing. BLEH.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I am glad I called my doctor :)

I think this is why when you have concerns, the best person to consult is

your doctor. It's hard to say from an email whether or not someone is

having a serious allergic reaction. Any time you get respiratory effects

from a medication, you should alert your doc. At the same time, sometimes

it's a really tough call, if the problem doesn't seem like an immediate

emergency.

Still and all, keeping track of your reactions -- even the mild ones -- is

probably a very good idea. Don't trust your doctor to do it. *wry

look* Know what I mean? And maybe next time you can simply take something

else.

Glad you're feeling better.

Best,

Em

Hi Shandi,

It sounds like you have a sinus infection. I don't think

Cipro can even help with that. It's more for bladder

infections. I think you need to talk to the hospital

administrator or another doctor because you should not be

having surgery when you have any kind of infection at all.

Please postpone your surgery.

Definitely notify your doctor! I am on cipro now myself for a sinus

infection but I'm okay with it, no side effects. I was just on

macrobid not long ago for the bladder and felt it coming back and the

doc said to take it again, well last tuesday I took one and had an

allergic reaction to it (who knows why!). I had chest pains,

shortness of breath, broke out in hives all over, my throat tightened

and my tongue swelled (talk about a weird and scary feeling)and that

threw me into a panic attack! I called my doc at 11pm that night!

Luckily I had benadryl on hand because my throat was definitely

closing! If you feel that happening like that call your doc

immediately to be on the safe side. Take care!
