OSHA has announced that it is accepting proposals from nonprofit organizations to develop safety and health training and educational programs under the Harwood Training Grants Program. Grant applications are due in the Arlington Heights office by 4:30 p.m. central time, July 3, 2003.

Approximately $7.8 million in grants is available to organizations that propose to educate workers and employers in small businesses, non-English speaking workers, and workers who are employed in high hazard industries and industries with high fatality rates. OSHA will be awarding grants in the following three categories.

Targeted Topic Training Grants will support training in:

· construction hazards

· general industry hazards

· transportation fatality hazards

· workplace violence

· emergency preparedness and response

· lead exposure

· silica exposure

· small business - safety and health management systems

OSHA Training Materials Development Grants will support the development, evaluation, and validation of training materials for the targeted topic training grants areas.

Ergonomics Guidelines Training Grants will support the development of and conducting of training based on the new OSHA-developed ergonomics guidelines

for:

· nursing home industry

· retail grocery stores

· poultry processing

· shipyards
