Guest guest
My son was first diagnosed with PSC and UC a year ago when all his liver enzymes were very high, and the ERCP confirmed the PSC. He has spent the year trying to get his colitis under control and after dropping 50 pounds and not responding to all the typical medications, his diarrhea and weight loss seem to be starting to respond to humira. He had a blood test done in Dec. (he had been off all drugs for a month and hadn't started humira or urso yet) and all the liver enzymes are normal on that blood test. Is that typical that they would fluctuate from very high to normal . . . or might his changes to his diet be actually helping. Do PSC patients often have liver enzymes return to normal levels? Guest guest
Thanks so much for your replies. When first trying to figure out what was wrong, he was told after an endoscopy that he didn't have celiac disease. They then did the colonoscopy and said he had serious UC as well as PSC. They have often referred to the possibility of him having auto immune hepatitis as well as his psc. After his initial diagnosis of psc they backtracked because his liver enzymes went to normal when he was given prednisone intravenously. (the prednisone did nothing to help the diarhhea so they weaned him off it) . . . However three months later they were back telling us that he had psc because of what they observed in an MRI and then an ERCP. During the ERCP they didn't mention opening any strictures and his enzymes didn't improve after his ERCP . . . it wasn't until 6 months later that they were better. He hasn't taken any antibiotics. Throughout all this time his ulcerative colitis and diarrhea has continued to be bad. The changes that he made to his diet were no raw vegetables or fruit as well as no sugar, milk, " fast food " and alcohol. I encouraged no wheat or yeast and more vegetables but that has been tough to implement.
