Deanna, I have had exercise induced asthma due to my lupus for almost three years now. It was horrible at first, so I know the fear you are feeling.Not being able to breathe is very hard. Please get to a pulmonary doctor and get on some asthma meds, whether that is the actual problem or not. They WILL help. I take Vospire twice a day ( the same as Theophylline, but I just can't take that one) one singulair in the evening and use steroid inhalers twice a day. I use Advair but there are some less expensive. The one thing that might help you the most is the Combivent inhaler. Asthma sufferers use it for rescue only, but I find myself using if at least twice a week. It won't hurt you and will open up those airways immediately and give you relief. Another tip is to TRY to stay calm and NOT think of not being able to breathe. I know that sounds impossible, but it can actually help you to breathe easily again. Pack the pillows on your bed and sleep with your back as upright as you can without discomfort. I also took muscle relaxers to help me sleep. Good old transquilizers can help, too, just to simply soothe you. NO one understands this situation more than me. I am sure you will be fine as I had severe problems for months before they gave me the right meds. I didn't get to have O2 as I never went to the ER out of stubborness thinking it would go away or that it was my nerves. It wasn't. You stay in that hospital as long as you need that air. And when you come home, keep that inhaler right next to you. I have three of them at all times.. one next to me, one in my purse and one in my bathroom. God bless you, dear. I am sure it will be alright. Some of it may be some swelling due to your surgery location. Remember, your nostrils go to your lungs, too. I know it's hard to relax when breathing is impaired, but I am sure the docs will take good care of you. In the meantime, you have all of our prayers. And, after surviving Charley, I can tell you that prayers are the biggest help you can have. Thank you ALL again for yours for Florida.
