Guest guest
Cheryl, Thanks you so much for sharing your experience and feelings toward live donor transplant. I have a lot to think about concerning this if and when the need would arise for my son. You have shared things I hadn't thought of before. I had not given thought to the donor's health being affected long term from transplant. Even though one knows it would be asking something great I hadn't let myself delve that far into the details, since Nick isn't "there" yet. Good information. in Mo. son, Nick(9) liver disease 1/09 Subject: Re: Live donor questionTo: Date: Tuesday, April 7, 2009, 6:23 PM Lori,My doctor used to say, (with his brusk humor) "It's not like giving a kidney or something." The risk of complications for the donor is much higher than for say a kidney. I personally would not consider putting anyone of my family member's health at risk, nor would I want someone else to do it either. But, I also understand I shouldn't make such a decision alone. I might be willing to die rather than have someone donate a part of their liver, but my family might have very different feelings on that issue. All of my four older children have health issues which would preclude them from donating anyway. I've had some in laws offer if the need arises. I hope never to have to make that decision. Even people with kidney issues die waiting for transplants. I have a friend who's mother needed a kidney transplant. Her husband gave one of his kidneys to his mother-in-law. Even though he was in excellent health (you have to be for them to accept an organ), his health has been adversely affectedby his sacrifice. My friend now has the same disease her mother had. She will need a new kidney in the future. She says she will not accept a live donor after seeing what her husband has gone through. It's a very complex decsion. Guest guest
, I neglected to say when my sister died of breast cancer metastisized to her liver, I would have donated to her in a second as would any of my other sisters. This was not possible because it had also metastisized to other parts of her body. I have ambiguous feelings about it. If it was my child or any child, I would do it in a heartbeat and be more open to the idea of someone else donating. Originally, only babies and small children received live donor transplants. There is not as much risk to the donor when they donate to a child. They don't have to take so much of the liver. What I feel on behalf of myself and what I feel on behalf of my children and not the same thing. We have had people on this site son to dad donation, brother to brother, parent to child, I can't even remember them all. I would guess that the process of transplanting from a live donor to another will improve as does all tranplanting procedures and post transplant protocol continues to do.
