Guest guest
Beth, There are several people on this forum who have regular ERCPs like that (or even more often). I am sure they will react to your mail soon. Regards, Chaim Boermeester, Israel From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of b_brandel58 Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 06:30 To: Subject: Multiple ERCP's?? I just had my 4th ERCP this year-- #1--pancreatitis in march or april--multiple small stones and GI thought maybe I had PSC #2--June diagnosised with PSC and 3 more small stones removed #3--October sludge removed and stent placed after 3rd cholangitis attack since August (8/18,9/16 and 10/13) #4--Today (Nov 17)--to remove stent--small amount of sludge found inside stent but otherwise the rest looked the best my GI has seen in me. After all of these ERCPs my GI is suggesting that for about the next 2 years that I have an ERCP done about every 6 months, during my downtime from nursing school. He said this way he can clean things up and hopefully catch any possible issues as early as possible (strictures, etc) My question is--has anyone had their dr suggest that they get ERCPs done like this? I trust my GI, he has always been upfront with me, and my gut just tells me that he is the best for me right now. I just worry about the possibilty of getting pancreatitis from the ERCP. Guest guest
I get them quarterly. My stents tend to get clogged. Apparently there are two schools, some like it done every three months and some closer to five or six months. I think that if it is getting clogged every three, why suffer those extra months?Sent via BlackBerry by AT&TDate: Tue, 18 Nov 2008 04:30:12 -0000To: < >Subject: Multiple ERCP's?? Guest guest
Beth, There seems to be different thoughts on this with doctors. I was diagnosed this summer and had my first ERCP in September. They did a baloon dilation, no stenting. I received the fun gift of pancreatitis and spent the night in the hospital. The doctor who performed the procedure wanted me to come back for a repeat ERCP in three months, but my hepatologist wants to monitor my LFTs and make a decision later, maybe 6 months or so. I went with the hepatologist's advice. I think a lot depends on what your bile ducts look like. I had one big stricture in my common bile duct, while the rest were not that bad. My hepatologist seems to think it would be less beneficial for me to have it that often. I see that you are in Thorton, CO. I live in the Denver area and definitely recommend you at least consult with the Hepatology people at the University of Colorado. They are on top of all the latest research, and if you ever need a transplant, you are already with the right people. Hang in there. Matt > > I get them quarterly. My stents tend to get clogged. Guest guest
And I'm doing it every 8 weeks at this point for stent changes--I think this is pretty standard if you have a case of PSC that's been a booger, and you need to keep on top of things. Guest guest
Nope, I get pain on both sides. Usually one or the other. Always lower towards the beltline. I don't know why. Most times it's on the left lower quadrant, which everyone (including the docs) says isn't normal, but lately on the right. Some people say it's because your liver is swollen and expanding past the ability of the outer membrane. Who knows. I just know it hurts and I am not making it up. Who would want to. I have to question myself sometimes, but I try to ride it out until I just can't stand it anymore and revert to the pain pills. I don't like the pain pills so I try to avoid them. No, my gallbladder has been gone since 2003. My only point was gained from the other more experienced and wiser individuals on this site that recommend " if you are feeling good, looking good, blood is good, why listen to the every 2, 3, 6 months ERCP process. " Try to keep a normal life as much as possible in these trying times. Life is good! Have a great day! in Minnesota

Guest guest
, I get pain in that area as well. My first two cholangitis attacks it was bad enough that I needed pain meds for it; my doctors were a bit puzzled, but gave me the meds anyway. In between cholangitis episodes I get pain there sporadically but it's never been as bad as those first two episodes. Referred pain maybe, or maybe it's 'really' hurting in that area, but I do know it hurts. I know you're not imagining it! Usually one or the other. Always lower > towards the beltline. I don't know why. Most times it's on the left > lower quadrant, which everyone (including the docs) says isn't normal, > > Have a great day! > > in Minnesota >
Guest guest
Well, as reassuring it is to hear it is not just me (or my imagination), I would rather you folks didn't have to go through it as well. I feel your pain! Sorry, couldn't help that one. My wife says I'm not that funny either. My doc says that even people that have an appendix problem/bursting sometimes have the pain radiate to the opposite side of the belly from what it is on as well. Sometimes there just isn't an appropriate explanation. They have checked my spleen with the countless cat/mri scans over the years and they don't see any significant signs of swelling. Keep the faith. Thanks for the help. in Minnesota
