Guest guest
This study is very interesting to me because Braden's serum folate levels have always been very high- above normal range- too high. We have been told that his serum levels were too high because of small bowel bacterial overgrowth. Braden doesn't have an ileoececal valve and has only @ 3 cm of ileum (largest segment of small intestines and the part that controls motility in the gut). So he has been destined since his first bowel resection, to have major bacterial overgrowth problems and one of the ways they test for it is doing serum folate levels. There is NO WAY that Braden is getting too much folic acid (to make his serum levels above normal) with his very compromised absorption that requires an elemental formula and gtube feeds. One of the first treatments we tried for B's bacterial overgrowth is xifaxan- a common treatment for those with PSC. I can't help but wonder if the kids studied have higher serum folate levels because of bacterial overgrowth- that is I think relatively common among IBD kids.
