Guest guest
Sandi, The Kahler Inn is the closest hotel to the majority of the Mayo Clinic and Rochester Methodist. It is attached via an underground walkway which is nice during the winter. You’re literally right across the street. If you happen to need to go to the St ’s portion of Mayo (doubtful as most facilities are in the Mayo building) there are shuttles almost all day long. My family stayed at the Kahler while I was having my J-pouch surgery there. It’s very convenient and safe. As far as cleanliness – we did have a small issue with getting a room that must have been smoked in and requested a non smoking room. But outside of this, it was a very nice place to stay. I’ve been to Mayo/Rochester 5 times now related to my UC and J-pouch and I think the Kahler is probably the best place to stay, especially if it is your first time at Rochester. I’d be happy to help with any other Mayo questions you have, so please let me know! I suppose this is a bit late to be asking, but I'm scheduled to go out to Mayo Rochester at the end of the week. I'm a veteran of Mayo ville, but Rochester's a whole new thing for me! Anyhow, we made reservations at Kahler Inn and Suites. Does anyone know anything about them? Are we staying at an okay place, is it near enough to the Mayo Clinic and, hopefully and most importantly, is the Inn a clean one? Thanks! Guest guest
As Rick said, it's pretty convenient to Mayo (underground walkway). We stayed there during the Rochester Antiques Fair a couple of years ago in August. An old hotel, but quite comfortable. Arne Anyhow, we made reservations at Kahler Inn and Suites. Guest guest
Sandi: We just stayed there last year. They give a discount if you are being seen at Mayo Clinic, they are only a rew steps to the registration deks at the Gonda Bldg. across the street. It is not as opulant as it once was because some of the shieks bought the top floor and don't use it much. You will crack up at the gift shops, one deals only in HIGH end silver and the other wines and do- das for the wealthy. They also will provide you with a small refrigerator and micro for a small fee if you need, be sure and call and reserve them if needed. We found these very helpful since we were back and forth and small meals can become very inconvenient and expensive with a special diet. We used the micro to warm up leftovers from the restaurant the night before. The food in the restaurant is good. They have wi-fi and as you go out the front door of the Kahler turn right and there is a Starbucks, they had really good smoothies that got Bob thru many times and caffeine for me. There is an introduction tour and I would go to the Mayo website and print off the maps, book a tour, and be sure and see about inside transportation if you need it. The lower level provides many amenities for shopping, medical supplies, pharmacy, massage salon, etc. The wonderful thing is at each appt. they give you a beeper and you can roam the halls and they even will call your cell phone if you want to go further than beeper will cover. The cab service is good and we always go to the ,I think it is the Canadian Goose Resturant, reasonable prices, good food and children friendly. Our favorites are beef strogonoff, potato skins and really good hamburgers. They have small brown bags labeled " Goose Droppings " which are chocolate covered peanuts. I brought them back for thank you gifts, small price to pay for a good laugh. We saw Dr. S. Kane, she was very new then and she has written some papers on GI issues but was not as versed on PSC as I had hoped but she consulted with PSC drs. and did her homework. She even went on line and was able to get immediate response for tests and questions to other drs. You will find the endoscopic drs. top notch as Arne will attest. The blood letting dept. is so efficient and adept you will find it hard to understand why all clinics and hospitals can measure up at least some to these people. One more hint, they will swab area with a numbing agent before drawing blood or shots, just ask, it is an expense some hospitalizations policies will not cover but the personnel in clinic know how to get around that. You can go on line and check out any of the drs. credentials, schooling and fellowships. There is also wi-fi in the clinic so take your labtop if you have one. You can always use it to keep notes, appts. and entertainment. Too much info , I hope not. If you get there and want any more personal info feel free to email. I wish you the best of luck and good results. Don't be afarid to ask for anything, even if you feel you need different drs. Go early to the registration desk and within minutes they will have a laison person to assist you. dee, wife of bob > Hi, all. Guest guest
I think that the Kahler Inn and Suites is not the same thing as the Kahler Grand Hotel, which is the one that's right across the street and is all old. I think the Inn and Suites is newer (though still close and connected to Mayo). I haven't stayed at either, but I get the sense that probably the Inn and Suites is newer and therefore better. Did you get my email about meeting up? I'd love to? I know Mayo like the back of my hand. I love it! My advice is to be proactive. My GI doctor is Dr. Sandborn, and last time I went he wanted me to just see his nurse practitioner. I told them that I didn't fly all the way from Chicago to see a nurse practitioner, I wanted to see Dr. Sandborn, and so they brought him in to see me. But if I hadn't insisted, I wouldn't have seen him. It can be a problem with big-shot doctors sometimes. Another tip is that if you are done early with one appointment and you have time before your next one (even if it's a procedure), go ahead to the next one, they will often squeeze you in early. It depends on how busy they are, but I've had some luck with that. It's nice to have it all done. Generally, I have found that they are very accommodating when you ask for stuff. Be in touch if you want to meet up and you want more Mayo tips!! There's a great massage place too if you're into that and I can recommend a particular therapist. Ruth > > > Hi, all.
