LFA Stimulates Millions for Lupus Biomarker Validation

> Dear Friends:

>

> As part of the Lupus Foundation of Americas (LFA) comprehensive efforts to

advance biomedical research on lupus, we are pleased to announce that the

LFA and its nationwide network of chapters have stimulated a major

Congressional appropriation for a critically-important area of lupus

research. The U. S. Congress, in the recently authorized FY 2005 Department

of Defense (DoD) Appropriations Bill, has provided up to $7 million to

support a lupus biomarker validation research program. This unprecedented

project will be jointly conducted by the DoD Uniformed Services University

of the Health Sciences (USUHS) and the National Institute of Arthritis and

Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS).

>

> Biomarkers are specific biochemicals in the body which have particular

molecular features that make them useful for diagnosing a disease, measuring

its progress or measuring the effects of treatment. Validated biomarkers

for lupus will expedite clinical trials on lupus, and stimulate increased

investment by biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to develop new,

safe and effective treatments for people with lupus.

>

> We look forward to reporting progress on this and other significant

research projects being advanced and supported by the Lupus Foundation of

America.
