«[The pain specialist] wants me to have two shots in my muscles

with steroid. Both places are in my back. I am not sure if that is what I

want to do. I have heard they are very painful and the one thing I don't

need is more pain. Has anyone had these steroids shots in their muscles? Was

there any reaction from it?»

I had one steroid injection in my right shoulder about a year ago. Other

than having a little numbness for about 2 hours after the shot, I didn't

have any reaction whatsoever. It didn't lessen my pain or cause me any

increase either. It just had no effect, so I have refused to have any more

of them.

«Do exercises.. do exercises.. that is all I hear. It hurts to exercise. It

just seems like a circle, going around and around. I cant exercise cause I

hurt, according to them my pain is cause I don't exercise. I just feel I am

in a no win situation.»

I can certainly relate to your frustration here. I am in exactly the same

situation. I have been referred to physical therapy umpteen times (at

several locations) and they always prescribe the same treatment and the same

exercises. The treatments (electrostim, ultrasound, and heat) might give me

an hour's worth of relief, if I'm lucky. The exercises oftentimes make my

pain worse, not better. Once, they tried massage, but it made things worse,

since the PTs don't seem to work the same way as a regular massage

therapist does; the movements were very brisk and businesslike, not soothing

and relaxing.

I finally told my pain specialist that I couldn't afford to continue paying

for therapy sessions that do absolutely nothing for me and that I am much

better off doing what exercise I can on my own (swimming and stretching

exercises in the water) than following the regimens that the PTs insisted on

prescribing, no matter how many times I explained to them that it just plain

didn't work. I was surprised, but he said he understood and that was the

end of the PT discussions.

«And to top it all off, I received a letter today saying they have

denied my SSD claim.»

Oh, I am so sorry to hear that! I'm expecting one of those letters any day

now, since this is the first time I have applied and I understand that it's

almost standard for them to reject you on the first application. I hope you

have good financial and emotional support. In my case, if it weren't for my

sister and my parents, I'd be on the street, but I can't continue my role as

the family's financial blackhole indefinitely....

«Why does life have to be so mean !!!»

That's the question I ask myself frequently... and I've yet to get an answer

I hope you're having a better day today.

«Celexa? Isn't that another NSAID similar to Bextra and Celebrex?»

Cathy responded:

«I believe Celexa is an antidepressant. I have heard that it is used for

treating people with compulsive disorders...such as shopaholics. I read

the side effects of of Celexa and wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole.»

My GP prescribed a daily dose of 20 mg of Celexa, which is indeed an

antidepressant, for me due to chronic depression. Other than becoming

nauseated after taking it-- I tried taking it both with and without food--

for the 1st three weeks, I haven't noticed any side effects. I do sleep a

bit better and I am feeling somewhat more positive than I was before I

started it.

Your comment made me curious: What side effects have you heard about that

made you decide not even to try it?

Thanks,

The side effect I had most problems with is the increased appetite. None of

my doctors told me about that side effect. If you go to www.cvs.com and click on

the pharmacy counter you'll be taken to a page where you can look up drugs and

you can find out side effects and other info about the drug. I use this site

a-lot when I start new meds. Take care!!
