Robin and Fran,

Your work with the Rural Women's Health Project and the farmworkers group is

interesting and exciting. Thanks for sharing (and yes -- please send us

samples of the anti- tobacco posters and fotonovelas, in both Spanish and

English).

WE are searching for ways to serve the cancer information needs of Florida

farmworkers, Hispanics and rural residents. I would like to explore

mutually-beneficial partnership opportunities with your group and with your

affiliates.

We are the Cancer Information Service (CIS), a branch of the National Cancer

Institute. The CIS is a national program and our local office, located at

the University of Miami, serves Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin

Islands. We operate the 1-800-4-CANCER service which offers reliable cancer

information for the public, patients and professionals -- in both Spanish

and English. One of the NCI's priority areas is tobacco control, and

callers who call our 1-800-4-CANCER number receive smoking-cessation

services.

We also have a dynamic Partnership Program that provides a variety of

services for those partners who, like your organization, " serve the

underserved. " The CIS Partnership Program brings cancer education and

information to communities -- particularly underserved and disenfranchised

ones -- through a wide network of active partners. Please visit our

website at www.coastalcis.med.miami.edu (the website is being updated and

expanded, but you can get an idea of the CIS and its services). Please also

visit www.cancer.gov, the national website, for more information.

By means of this message, I would also like to introduce you to two other

partners: (1) Hispanic Health Initiative and its President, phine

Mercado, which operates in six central Florida counties; and (2) Redes en

Accion, a national program directed regionally by Angel Loor and which

focuses on cancer control among Hispanics. Both partners may be interested

in the Spanish anti-tobacco materials your group has developed.

Please call or write me at your convenience, and let's explore ways to help

you serve your constituents' need for cancer education and information.

Sincerely,

Islara Souto, MPH
