I do want to share with the pre ops some great tidings...I went to my mother's condo. I haven't been there since last year (size 24). Most of the people in St. Pete where the condo is located, are older; and DID NOT RECOGNIZE ME!!!! My mother ( who is also obese), was not very supportive of my surgery 9/13/99, but is now telling everyone it was her idea--go figure. Anyway, I felt like Graham--they were all coming up to me, and have asked if they can bring their fat friends over to talk to me about this miracle (I am officially a size 8!!!!). Dealing with a weird ailment that most people don't understand or in many instances think you're full of crap and just a lazy ass is no easy task. There is no correct approach to instill in everyone and people do the best they know how to live with it. My opinion is that if many of those how have been critical of me over the 16 years I've had this also had it they'd not do nearly as well coping. How often I've seen friends fall apart over things that I might shrug at by comparison, and they are blessed with good health and vitality. One of the most profound experiences I aver had with sharing information about this condition was with my best friend. I had never mentioned it to him because we used to play racquetball together and he knew me as a guy in great shape with a great physique, we used to coach youth football together even. When I explained my health issue his response was to say " I'm sorry to hear that, but I just don't allow those things into my life " , as he recited biblical scripture to me for the basis of his feelings. One day my best friend called with strange symptoms while he was at work, it did not sound good. I told him to call his wife and get to a hospital, turns out he had a stroke. I never uttered a word to him about what he had said to me about my health issue, I felt it wasn't necessary. His wife subsequently developed breast cancer, thankfully she's doing fine now but it rough for a while. My buddy is not working now, and it's getting to him, all I do is hope he'll never look down on someone that way again, he's living the parable that say's " there for the grace of God go I " .
