As

his bile duct cancer got worse, eating away at his liver, he tirelessly

promoted organ donations. He recorded TV spots asking

people to donate, even after his health had so deteriorated that he was no

longer eligible for a transplant himself.

Through it all, he was humble.

By

1998 Payton was losing weight, looking gaunt. Doctors

diagnosed him with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare liver disorder. He

made his illness public in February 1999, and he died nine months later.
