I just responded to the small duct PSC question and posted a link to a

pericholangitis article. Here is what they said were the causes of

pericholangitis (small duct PSC)

Causes

* The etiology of pericholangitis is unknown.

* Proposed theories include the following:

o Autoimmunity

o Portal bacteremia

o Absorption of colonic toxins

o Ischemic injury to the biliary tree

o Viral infections

o Toxic bile acids in a genetically predisposed individual

Aren't these the same causes for classic/large duct PSC ?

My son has ALL of the above known factors that could have caused his

PSC. We know about his risks because of his short bowel syndrome and

what it can do to the liver/biliary system. I guess that is an

'advantage' in some ways to know what is causing problems..but not in

being able to treat the problems in his case.

The above causes seem to point towards hope for vancomycin trials to

be successful in treating PSC.
