They are working on growing organs - they are not there yet with livers. Someone on this board said they are in the single digits away (less than 10 years). There have been replacement bladders grown and transplanted ( http://www.cnn.com/2006/HEALTH/conditions/04/03/engineered.organs/index.html )- but I'm not aware of any other organs.Any liver (other than one grown from your own cells or a liver donated by an identical twin) can be rejected. , Mom to 18 yo daughter UC 6/95, PSC 3/09To: Sent: Tuesday, April 7, 2009 9:30:12 PMSubject: One more question Re: Live donor question

Does anyone know why they are not concentrating on live liver donation (maybe they are) more than transplants? Even though live liver donation is risky for both the donor and the one receiving a part of someones liver, in my finite understanding, it would seem still less risky than a liver transplant. Why wait for someone to pass away when there may be those willing to donate? Since they are learning to grow livers, could they use them. Maybe they already are in some countries and I am not aware. Can a person with PSC who has a liver donation reject it just like with transplantion. Oh, in my heart I hope and pray for a miracle breakthrough soon.

That (matching blood type) is one of those things that seems to vary from site to site:Variations I've seen:Blood type - compatible donor (O can give to any ABO type) v. matching ABO type (O can only give to O)Relationship - must be a relative v. donor may not even have known recipient before donationAge - at least 18, but upper cutoff varies from 45 to 60

Baylor has only done 4 living donor transplants since 2002. I think 3 were for children. I do know the one they did at Baylor Dallas passed away after surgery.
