The Hispanic Health Council, a non-profit community based research

organization, has an opening for a full-time Outreach Interviewer for

a three-year, federally-funded study of drinking behaviors among

Connecticut farmworkers. This study is based in Hartford, but

requires frequent travel to selected farms within the state of

Connecticut. The Outreach Interviewer will recruit and conduct

survey interviews with a group of 300 farmworkers about their alcohol

use, mental and emotional health, HIV and other health-related risks,

and pertinent issues. S/he also will support linkage of participants

to other requested services, and participate as a member of the

research team in helping to disseminate and present project

findings. The Outreach Interviewer must be available to work

evenings and occasional weekends. The Hispanic Health Council offers

a supportive, multi-ethnic and interdisciplinary work environment and

excellent opportunities for growth.

Responsibilities

1. Through outreach and community agency referral, locate and

recruit farmworkers who drink alcohol to participate in a survey

and/or focus group interview;

2. Conduct survey interviews regarding participants' alcohol

use, HIV risks, physical and mental/emotional health status, and

related issues.

3. Refer project participants to health and social service

organizations in Connecticut, including occasional transportation of

participants to medical appointments.

4. Prepare survey interviews for data entry;

5. Maintain systems for protecting the confidentiality of

project participants;

6. Participate in developing reports, papers, presentations,

and publications.

Qualifications

At least 3 years experience in community-based outreach and/or

research, particularly interviewing or field-based studies; research

and/or intervention with farmworker populations or in the field of

substance abuse; fluency in written and spoken Spanish; excellent

communication and interpersonal skills. Prior experience working with

Hispanic or West Indian populations a plus. Must have reliable

transportation (mileage is reimbursed), a valid driver's license,

auto insurance, and a good driving record. Minority candidates

strongly encouraged to apply.
