If you just want it to look like chocolate go to Micheals (or a

similar crafty place) and buy brown food coloring. The professional

cake decorating kind. It will look perfect. I promise. (no idea if

it is scd legal but it may be close enough for these special occasions

for your comfort)

A little goes a very long way with those colorings so go light!

Pureed dates or prunes added to the frosting may work.

This is something that I would be very careful as my son is VERY

sensitive to food colors. Be sure that food colors/dyes are not an

issue for him.

This cake recipe is said to be a great chocolate cake substitute.

http://uclbs.org/recipes/desserts/sue14datecake.php

It is quite tasty. If you just want to make chocolate looking

frosting you could puree some of the date mixture in the recipe and add

it to the cream cheese.

Molly,

I am behind in reading the messages, so someone else may have posted this. I

thought that I

had read recently that chocolate cravings were related to (I think it was)

magnesium

deficiency! I am NOT positive and I can't remember where I read it, but I will

look through my

reading material and see if I come across it again. Does your son take any

magnesium? If so,

what kind? (oxide, glycinate, citrate, sulfate?) (By the way, magnesium oxide

is not very well

absorbed).

Dear Molly:

I sometimes use the 14 date (medjool) cake recipe (as per BTVC) which my

daughter calls " chocolate " cake. For icing, I mix pure plum puree with

unpasteurized honey. It is dark and spreads well like icing. It doesn't taste

like chocolate, but looks reasonably brown/dark. I suppose it could be boiled

first, then cooled, but I haven't bothered. The amount of honey seems to

preserve it. It keeps for several days in the fridge. Decorating with frozen

berries delights my kids.

Molly,

Sue's Fourteen Date Cake is my favorite of all SCD desserts and tastes very much

like chocolate cake. And it is good with the Bavarian Cream Icing even though

that is

white.

Since it is very concentrated in dried fruit serve very small pieces for those

that are not

advanced on the diet. ( The cake is so delicous thati's hard to keep from

overindulging )

The recipe is at:
