Guest guest
Oh, Gail, I am so sorry that you have been through so much traumatic medical situations this past few weeks. It was over whelming to read about them, much less trying to imagine dealing with them. It really all seems too uncanny to be real. One after another. I know your family is so fortunate to have you. The PAI has taught you a lot about researching illnesses and how to be a patient and caregiver to optimize your hospital stay, and maximize the relationship you have with your physicians and the rest of the health care providers. Did they release your father in law to home? How is his functional status? As a past Director of Nursing of LTC facilities with recuperative care units, I really feel that they are a wonderful adjunct to the transition from acute care to home. He has 30 days to reconsider if he / the family feels he could benefit from strengthening, etc. He is at particular high risk in light of the data that he had a previous 'stroke'; two weeks previously. Sometimes called, Medicare Units, they are underutilized, as doctor's think you need to have a fractured hip or IV's to qualify and, unfortunately many patients are fearful because they are a division of long term care, traditionally called nursing homes. My mother went to one after she was int he hospital with heart complications, and was discharged much stronger than she would have been without the additional rehab and medication management. My condolences for your uncle, and your cousin. It is such a psychological adjustment to deal with a colostomy. I am so sorry that she is having a fourth operation, is she having repeated revisions? You and I speak a lot about the role stress plays in the disease process as well as how it hinders healing. I would encourage you to visit literature written by Dr. Weil and Dr. Mercola and consider their recommendations for vitamin supplementation in light of illness complicated by external familial stress factors. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you or Kerry. Love, Karyn Karyn E. , RN Founder / Executive Director Pancreatitis Association International Corp.
