Guest guest
Ken, has your medication changed recently? I've had similar sensations when on codiene. I don't have trouble with hydrocodone - well not that trouble. It does make me itchy sometimes but benadryl seems to keep the itching to a tolerable level. W Itchy Joints I am starting to feel a little desperate. Has anyone else experienced a tickling sort of itch, like a blade of grass sawing on you, but inside their joints? Especially the major joint areas such as shoulders, knees and hips? This has been off & on for a few months now, but over the last week it's become everyday, almost all day and I am starting to get a little nuts. The truly weird thing is the sensation is only very strong when I try and relax. If I am in motion, I still feel it, albeit not nearly as intense. A one time use doc prescribed an antihistamine every 8 hrs, but it doesn't work. I've even tried doubling up with Benedryl as well. Any help is truly appreciated, and the quicker the better. I have only slept about 12hrs this week and I am so totally exhausted, I'm almost willing to do anything to get some relief. Guest guest
There was a small med change. The doc that gave me the antihistamine is my supposedly new PCP. He doesn't believe in pain meds at all it seems as he has taken me off all of them. I went to the ER on Weds to get some relief, and they gave me a shot off something in the tush. Damn thing still is sore too. ;-) Anyway, I went from 40 mg OxyContin twice a day to nothing overnight. You suppose I am having withdrawals? If I am, why did they start months before the Oxycontin stopped? My diarrhea came back again, now that I am nearly opiate free and the cramps are such that you can't tell whether you are vomiting or both. I don't know what to think, even if I could. I just know I can't sleep and I'm feeling like a cow patty that's been run over by a Mack truck. adTHANKSvance, K Re: Itchy Joints Ken, has your medication changed recently? Guest guest
Ken, It does sound like it could be withdrawal related. However, that wouldn't make a lot of sense if it started before the narcotics were stopped. I really know very little about withdrawal. I think I may have experienced it very mildly two different times. One time I had shoulder surgery and they asked me if I would participate in a pain med study. I was given long acting oxycontin (i think). I took it twice a day for two weeks. The study was a double blind (I think). Half the patients were given the same dose of long acting oxycontin twice a day for the entire two weeks. The other half of the patients were given slowly decreasing doses of the long acting oxycontin. I was to chart my pain during the entire two weeks post-op. Anyway, once the two weeks was up, I didn't take any pain med because my shoulder was to the point that just ibuprofen took care of the pain. I had horrible restless legs for two nights after I got in the bed. I had no problem during the day but when I got in bed my legs were really itchy and it seemed I just needed to keep them moving. I ended up sleeping in the recliner as for some reason that made it better. I had no clue what the problem was. When I told my hubby about it, he said it sounded like withdrawals. He was quite the hippy in his younger years so he had experience with many different drugs! I had a similar experience after another one of my many joint surgeries. I don't remember the specifics of that one as much, but I do remember the pain med was oxycontin (or something of that variety). With all my other surgeries, I have been given either demerol or hydrocodone. Well, I've also been given morphine or dilaudid short term IV in the hospital. I've never had any other withdrawal symptoms. However, I'm sure at this point I am physically dependent on Lortab. I've had it daily since mid July when the panc problems returned. I sent my PCP an e-mail asking him about physical dependence and withdrawal and he told me that was the least of my worries at this time. He said that was why he has me under the care of a pain management physician. He said when the time comes that I am not having pain, the pain doc will know how to best get me off the narcotics with minimal problems. My PCP is VERY conservative when it comes to pain med but he does also believe that having uncontrolled pain is not good for your body. I guess I sort of got off on a tangent. Hopefully, some of the other members will be more knowledgeable on the subject. W Itchy Joints I am starting to feel a little desperate. Guest guest
Ken, It certainly sounds like the feelings I had coming off of high doses of narcotics before having my pump implanted. I was miserable, couldn't sleep, sit or stand in any one place for very long. It only lasted the one night (because I was on morphine and under general anesthesia the next day) but it was the worst night of my life. I have no idea why it began before going off the meds for you but coming off that much at once you had to have had a physical dependence. I hope it ends quickly for you, whatever it is.
