Guest guest
We too were always told to call asap with cold symptoms, weekends/holidays or whatever. If she gets a cold she always gets a sinus infection so they put her on antibiotics immediately, usually Septra. I wouldn't wait until Monday. Guest guest
Keeley, I have 2 children w/cf, one is 14 and the other is 11 wks. My son Evan is the baby and he recently had a lung infection, he just got out of the hospital after being there for 16 days . I was on the phone and at the cf center 2x a week they never heard his cough so they assumed it was from reflux because each time they listened to his lungs they said he sounded clear, I didn't like his cough or stuffy nose but they kept assuring me that he was fine. In the mean time my 14 year old got sick (most likely caught it from Evan) she was admitted to the hospital and while she was there I had Evan w/me(we were in a private room and he wore a mask, he slept most of time) anyway Evan started coughing and the nurse looked alarmed at his cough...I told her it was from reflux and she said " no, I don't think so ....let me go get the dr. " . Guess what? they admitted him with a lung infection and a small part of his lung collapsed. He's ok now, just got off of augmentin but he was on 2 i.v. meds while in the hospital. I just wanted to tell you to make sure you are persistant with your doctors, just to be sure get an xray. I was really upset with the drs. but they have been so great with my daughter, her FEV1 is 105!!!! she wasn't diagnosed until she was 5 so I'm nervous...even if he sneezes I'm pacing the floor. They assured me from now on they will treat Evan differently. I'm sure that means a lot of xrays, which also makes me nervous! He is doing great now, I also asked the question about his cpt, I do it 3 times a day, sometimes more and he doesn't cough anything up, the drs. explained that babies swallow their mucus and then poop it out. Please let me know how Leila is doing. Good luck....be persistant mom to 14 w/cf, Cody 11 wocf, Zoey 3 wocf, Evan 11 wks w/cf

Guest guest
---Hi Keeley, I am certainly not an authority but I can tell you how we handle colds. My daughter is 10 wcf. Typically when she gets a cold we put her on Augmentin not for the cold itself as antibiotics don't work on viruses but for the secondary infection that may occur. Our rule of thumb is the second any cough starts she goes right on antibiotics. And of course this always happens on the weekends!!!!! If I were you I would call your pulmonologist or the on call pulmonologist to see what there protocol is. Ours is to treat aggressively. Good Luck and better to be cautious and call. J. It started on Wednesday, and she had a little cough then. This morning she was really coughing on awakening and couldn't breath because her little nose was so clogged. I did CPT and she coughed a little, but nothing came up. If today were a week day I'd call her pulmonologist, but here we are on a weekend (aren't they always sick on holiday/weekends?). I am concerned because I was told if she got sick she would be put on antibiotics, but does that mean every time she gets a runny nose? I guess I'm still unsure what I'm supposed to be looking for. Is this CF or a cold or both? I feel like a new parent and I'm not! I'm worried, but I'm not sure if I should be or not. Guest guest
I'll tell ya, because I know we are in the same region geographically. We've had two colds in the past three weeks. The first one my dd (no CF) got badly, and had fever and felt awful...Jake barely got it. The second one started Friday night, last week. My dd who is four also started with it and then got it as well. It consisted of a very runny nose, mostly clear in color, but lots of mucus, then two to three days of a very yucky sounding cough. It was only because my dd coughed just as much and almost as yucky-sounding that I didn't panic when Jake coughed (I can count on one hand the number of times he's coughed in his life). His sounded a little deeper. But, it cleared within 2-3 days. The stuffed/runny nose lasted Monday to today, and he's just clearing up today. He seems fine and I don't think he'll need antibiotics this time. Both my kids felt fine, played normally, no fever throughout this cold so it sounds really similar to what you have. Clinics vary in what they do with colds. Ours says that if a runny nose lasts more than a week or ten days, they will want to do antibiotics. I always check in with them anyway. I think they said a cough of more than a few days. 's cough happened the day before T-day, T-day, and yesterday so I didn't call them about it. It's just about gone now. It followed the exact same pattern as my dd's cough but took one more day to disappear. So...my advice is check in with your clinic on Monday -- sooner if she is really coughing hard throughout the day or takes a turn for the worse, like fever or green snot, but I really think she sounds ok, just like a normal cold virus. It really does take them just a little longer to get over colds than " normal " kids but they can do it. Hey, did you know, Leila was one of our first choices if was a girl. We had plenty of girl names but no boy names so he had no name till he was, ahem, ten days old. :-D )O( mama to , 2yo, w/CF, and , 4yo, no CF Baby's first illness - what now? Guest guest
Hi Keeley, We do the same as J. We also up the Albuterol nebulizers to as many as we can per day. the doc recommends 4 but we usually squeeze in 3. Guest guest
Hi Lenora, When I called the doc asked me if they (I assume he meant the clinic) had gotten us a nebulizer. We don't have one, and they haven't mentioned anything about it. I don't understand why she would need it unless she was wheezing, which hasn't been the case. Does your child have asthma as well, or do they use albuterol for something else? Keeley Re: Baby's first illness - what now? Hi Keeley, We do the same as J. Guest guest
Ah, so you've had the crud your way too. It really hasn't been too bad. My big girl hasn't acted even slightly ill, but she has a lgt. yellow runny nose and night cough. I hope Leila ends up doing as well as your Jake. Hadley has only been sick a couple times in her life, and hasn't ever had antibiotics. She stays at home with me and while we do attend a play group, we are careful about handwashing. I wasn't too surprised our doc wanted us on antibiotics, but I'm not thrilled about it. I know the antibiotics are preventative, but I hate giving them when she doesn't need it now. What about bug resistance? We'll do what we have too to keep her well, but I don't have to like it! So I take it you didn't know you were having a boy before he was born? Leila is a family name for us. It took us a long time to agree on a second name, but when we found this one it seemed perfect. How nice that you have a boy and a girl. My husband really wanted a boy, but I definitely wanted another girl. Now I'd like a third to be a boy, but we'll see if that third actually happens. Keeley Baby's first illness - what now? My little Leila has her first cold. I'm not surprised, actually, because her older sister started it and now we all have it. If Leila were a child w/o CF I would be completely unconcerned. She has a mild runny nose, but still smiles & plays, eating well, no fever, sleeping fine. Arrrgh! Guest guest
Yes, I always thought we'd have a third, but now, that is probably not going to happen. I wanted another girl to be honest, mainly because I never had a sister and wanted to have one. But of course I am very happy with a boy, too! No, I didn't know what I was having before he was born. I had a home birth and the pregnancy had as little intervention as possible. I did have a late ultrasound at about 28 weeks due to possible preterm labor but I asked them not to tell me -- they said he had his legs crossed anyway so they couldn't tell. ;-) In retrospect I am glad I had one so that if there was any bowel blockage they would have seen it. There wasn't, we lucked out in that respect. Jake has tended toward the other end of things GI-wise -- that is, too loose rather than too firm. LOL. I feel the same way you do about antibiotics. I worry about bug resistance as well. Lately I have begun insisting on a throat culture before doing antibiotics for just nasal/sinus congestion due to viral infection, because tends to get sinus congestion that goes on for ten days to two weeks before clearing. And I use signs like paleness of skin, lack of energy, and cough to determine if I think it's time for antibiotics. So far we have done ok but Jake has been on antibiotics 7 times since diagnosis. My dd has been on them once in her life, for a lymph node that became bacterially infected after the flu last year. Hope Leila feels better real soon! )O( mama to , 2yo, w/CF, and , 4yo, no CF Re: Baby's first illness - what now? Ah, so you've had the crud your way too. It really hasn't been too bad. Guest guest
Keeley, You'll learn all about FEV1 and other pft's, 105 is excellent. As far as the cpt goes, Evan gets a neb 3x a day with the pt, we just fit it in our schedule, I don't have a choice, I know that doing this is only going to help him. My 3 year old knows that this gets done before anything else, then she gets quality time, my husband helps with this as well. My 11 year old knows the routine from his older sister so its nothing new to him. by the way, my situation is probably different from most families with more than 1 child with cf. I got remarried 5 years ago, my second husband is also a carrier. We didn't know Evan had cf until he was 12 days old, we didn't even know he was tested. Two years ago they started screening newborns in PA for genetic diseases. Needless to say we were shocked when we found out. I have two children with cf that have 2 different last names, it still seems so unbelieveable but what else can we do but fight it the best way we can! mom of 14 w/cf, Cody 11 wocf, Zoey 3 wocf, Evan 11 wks w/cf
Guest guest
Hi Kee;ey, has had the nebulizer since he was a few weeks old, even thought he was not diagnosed with asthma until 5 years later. I think it is a common cf item to have and I am guessing you may get one soon. Not only is it used to dispense Pulmozyme, but also albuterol, which is a way to keep airways open, with or without asthma. Keep us posted! I am sure things will heal up quickly!
