Is CVS the same as IVF?

No they are not the same.

CVS is Chorionic Villi Sampling which can be done at 10 weeks

gestation. There is a 1 in 100 chance for miscarriage in doing a CVS

test. They take a sample of the placenta and can do a genetic test

for many things including CF. It takes about 2 weeks to get the

genetic test results and based on that, you have to make a decision

whether or not to continue the pregnancy. This is the method we will

use but I will NOT have another CF child so if it isn't succesful (no

CF baby) then we will do the IVF with PIGD.

An alternative to CVS is amniocentisis which is done at 15 weeks and

can achieve the same results but if you choose to terminate the

pregnancy it is more costly and harder physically and emotionally.

IVF is Invitro Fertilization. This is where they pull multiple eggs

from the woman and sperm from the man (guess who has more fun with

that!) and they combine them in a petri dish and then implant the

embryos into the uterus and hope it takes hold.

PIGD is Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis--they can test the embryo

when it is 8 cells big. They can do genetic testing for CF at that

time and only implant those without CF or that only carry the gene.

This is pretty pricey in addition to IVF. But it is the only sure

way to avoid a pregnancy with CF.

I hope this helps!
