Jo, about 10% of those with ocular rosacea have corneal involvement,

though not the particular manifestation you describe. Only an

ophthalmologist is likely to know a great deal about Dot Map

Fingerprint Dystrophy.

How long did it take for your face to clear up on the doxycycline?

What do you mean by " clear up. " (I ask because a very quick response

to doxycycline isn't characteristic of rosacea, and I can't imagine

you were on the medication for very long, if you attribute your

subsequent side effects to doxycycline.)

A true allergy to doxycycline is very rare, but more common and

therefore something to consider is hypersensitivity vasculitis. It's

a drug reaction that involves the immune system in a different way

than typical allergies, and so produce different symptoms. In

addition to the hives, many people with hypersensitivity vasculitis

feel flu-like achiness, low grade fever -- overall just not feeling

well, which also resolves along with the rash. The cramps aren't

characteristic, but who knows.

It's impossible to tell over the Web, so I would recommend touching

base with your primary care doctor. I can't know, but it doesn't

sound like you're manifesting the typical signs and symptoms of

ocular rosacea, and (although I'm doubtful) you may have shown an

immune response to doxycycline. Tell your doctor how many days into

the doxycycline treatment the hives/leg cramps started, and how many

days it took for the symptoms to resolve once your stopped the drug.

If a hypersensitivity vasculitis makes sense, you'll need blood tests

to insure it has completely resolved, and additional blood work as

part of a connective tissue workup may be appropriate (although Dot

Map Fingerprint Dystrophy is not classically associated with

connective tissue diseases).

Good luck! Keep us posted.

Hi Jo-

You mentioned that you were " reading a site " which mentioned something about

Type A+.

I am interested in what this site had to say, as I too am type A+. Could

you send the link?

Thanks,
