Guest guest
thnaks for youe info Liam has been diagnosed with Silent reflux too. They put him on zantac but it didnt seem to work. I have stoped it and am now using 5 drops of lemon juice during the day in water, this helps to alkaline the stomach and make it less acid. I have dont that all day today and he has had a very good day with feeding, he even was happy laying down, NO screaming!!! horray for the mother who carries Liam around all day apart from when he sleeps. monique mum to Liam4 months wcf Re: appetite problems breastfeeding stressful , This can be a sign of acid reflux. My daughter Emma, who is now two years old and diagnosed at birth with CF, was a breastfeed baby supplemented with formula (as instructed by her CF doctors). She had severe feeding problems which started right around when five months or so. She showed absolutely none of the typical signs of acid reflux, no crying when laying down, no throwing up (while her sister vomited constantly when she was an infant she went through 3-5 outfits a day), no signs of acid reflux at all. She just slowly over time started getting progressively worse about eating. I brought it up to her doctors and they felt I was making her nervous or upset when she was eating and gave me instructions to relax when I was feeding her. This did not help at all. I kept pushing and pushing the issue because I was getting more and more frustrated with her not eating hardly anything. Eventually they tested her for acid reflux (milk scan it is often called) as well as how well her stomach empties (swallow study). The test for acid reflux indicated she did in fact have acid reflux. They labeled it as silent acid reflux since there were no real symptoms present other than lack of appetite or desire to eat. She was put on meds but they didn't do much for her. She eventually stopped drinking and eating totally. Her doctors were less than attentive when this happened (the fact that she was not peeing at all at night didn't seem to bother them). I lost it on them and transferred her to her current CF team at CHOP. They hospitalized her that day for dehydration and when she left, we started using an NG tube to supplement her feeding. Her meds were also changed and she started eating again. At that point, she finally started vomiting on a regular basis but at least she was eating. It is now a year and a half later and she still has a G tube because she won't drink enough liquids during the day. She only eats pureed foods but for the most part, she keeps them down (vomits here and there) and her weight is great. She's around the 50th percentile (much heavier than her older non-CF sister at this age). So ... if it continues, I would talk to your doctors about getting him tested for acid reflux. Silent acid reflux is not common and they made me feel like I was totally crazy and neurotic about her eating. I wished I had know earlier about silent reflux, I would have insisted they test her a lot sooner rather than four months after it all started. Good Luck.
