" You probably won't lose down to your " ideal " weight loss. You'll lose down to maybe 30 pounds above it, then the rest of it will take some work on your part. Your stomach stretches over time and the intestines adapt, too, so you don't have as much malabsorption and you can eat more than you can initially. By about a year to fourteen months, you have " leveled off " and don't lose much, if any weight, after that (other than by the old standbys, diet and exercise . . . sigh). Most of the midweights (starting out around 250) seem to lose 20 pounds a month the first two months, then 10 pounds a month for 3-4 months after that, then 5 pounds a month after that, until it levels off. People who are heavier starting weights seem to lose more in the first three months than the midweights, somewhere around 30 pounds a month the first month 20-25 the next. Just my observations. Your mileage may vary. Kind regards,

Guest guest
This is what I have learned. Yes in most cases, you will stop losing weight. If you are anerexic, no. Most bodies know what their ideal weight is. Once you get close to where IT feels it is supposed to be, you will slow down in weight loss and most likely stop. Now if you want to continue to lose, exercise and diet or not eating at all would make you lose more. This procedure is reversable if you need it. Takes about an hour and is done laproscopically too. a > can't answer and won't let it go, he keeps asking and says he will continue > to do so until he gets a satisfactory answer. He is very concerned about the > long term effects this will have on my life. Guest guest
Gwen, I had the MGB on 6-2 and went to clinic on Tuesday before that. Dr. Rutledge told us that he customizes the surgery to the individual depending on their age and weight. When you hear that 6 feet are bypassed that is a generalization. The body is very adaptive and in about a year the part of the small intestine that is attached to the new, small stomach is operating about like the duodenum that was bypassed. That means you don't have as much malabsorption as previously. This may not be exact but it is my understanding of the explanation. Like you I was more concerned with losing than stopping the process. Somehow, that problem is inconceivable to me. I am only in the beginning stage, I have lost enough that people are starting to notice. I am too chicken to get on the scale and am waiting for my one month anniversary to do that. Good Luck and I hope this helps.
