Guest guest
I have seen this mentioned a few times but really do not know what it is. Could someone please explain!!! It was mentioned that a probiotic should be used one while on Cipro (my 3 yr old is on that now). What is it and what does it do! Thanks mom of Hannah (3 wcf and Tommy 5 1/2 wocf w/ashma
Guest guest
Hi , Acuri Ware is the one that convinced me to finally try probiotics. She'd give them to whenever he was on an antibiotic. As you know, antibiotics are supposed to kill " bad bacteria. " The problem is, an antibiotic can't distinguish between good and bad. So, while an antibiotic is working to kill off say -- a strep throat infection -- it's also creating havoc with helpful intestinal and normal respiratory floral. A probiotic helps maintain the friendly intestinal flora, which is often killed with antibiotics. Probiotics are sold over-the-counter (you can find them at pharmacies and health food and nutrition stores). Certain medicines and foods/beverages can cause an inbalance or overgrowth of intestinal flora, such as candida. That's why eating yogurt with live acidolphilus cultures is often recommended when you are taking antibiotics or when you have a yeast infection. Acidolphilus is one type of probiotic. My son takes Zithromax every day. Because this is an antibiotic, I think taking some steps to keeping his gut balanced is a good idea. And even though he loves vanilla-flavored yogurt, when he runs out he doesn't always rush to the store to buy more. He also is a college kid. That means his diet contains beer, uh... now and then. :-) Beer contains yeast... which candida loves. The last thing wants to do is take another pill. I can't blame him. But he agrees with the reasoning, so he takes a probiotic (and extra magnesium and vitamin C) after poker night with his buddies. The rest of the time, we don't worry about it. He hasn't been on Cipro since last July (knock wood) but the next time he needs an oral antibiotic, at least he has the probiotics on hand. Kim Mom of (23 with asthma and cf) and (20 asthma no cf) I have seen this mentioned a few times but really do not know what it is. Could someone please explain!!!
